Jacksonport State Park schedules activities

Local veterinarian honored

March 30, 2009 When 10-year-old Paul Clark’s father was deployed to Iraq last year, Paul had no one to take him fishing. Dr. Mark Williams immediately stepped in, and that would be just one of many things the local veterinarian would do for the Clark family while National Guard Spc. E-4 Brandon Clark was deployed.Williams was honored Thursday with a Patriot Award in recognition of “extraordinary support” of the Arkansas National Guard and Reserve.

Local NWTF chapter celebrates 20th year

March 27, 2009 The Independence County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation celebrated its 20th year with a record-setting membership drive and banquet March 7 at Independence Hall on the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, banquet chairman Gary Stroud said.“This 15-gun event was the largest, with approximately 300 in attendance,” Stroud said. “Randy Ward with Fred’s Fish House did an excellent job of feeding the record crowd.”

Tykes ride trikes

March 27, 2009 CAVE CITY — Children at From The Beginning, a Child Health Management Services Clinic and Developmental Preschool, recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Trike-A-Thon.“Our facility raised $600 to donate,” said registered nurse and site director Annette Townsley.Curriculum provided by the hospital was used during the week. Lessons learned included wear your helmet, never ride in the street, be careful near driveways and watch where you’re going.

Lyon professor writes two books

March 27, 2009 Dr. Martha Beck, professor of philosophy at Lyon College, has authored two books that were published this spring.“Interpreting Sophocles’ Philoctetes Through Aristotle’s Theory of Tragedy: How do We Educate People to Be Wise?” deals with the topic of classical liberalism, an idea rooted in classical Greek ideology.

Arrests made in ball park burglary

March 27, 2009 Four juveniles have been arrested in a recent break-in at the Batesville Recreation Complex on East Main Street, according to Independence County Sheriff Keith Bowers.“The Criminal Investigations Division conducted several interviews Monday and four arrests were made in connection to the burglary,” Bowers said. “Three 16-year-old boys and one 17-year-old boy were taken into custody.“They have been charged with one count each of commercial burglary and one count each of theft of property.”
