Lyon honors staff

August 19, 2009 Several Lyon College employees were honored Tuesday for their years of service to the college.Gina Garrett was awarded the Betty Branscum Staff Member of the Year Award. Garrett was recently named the college’s director of alumni services and development. She graduated with a bachelor of arts from Lyon College in 1993 and has worked at the college for the past 14 years.Other staff members honored for their years of service include:

Boil order lifted at Strawberry

August 19, 2009 STRAWBERRY — The Strawberry Water System is no longer under a boil order.Effective Tuesday, the Arkansas Department of Health released the system from the Aug. 13 boil water, Manager Randy Richey said.“Water samples taken have been tested and reported as ‘safe,’” Richey said.A break in a water main last week caused the order to be issued.

Hope Lutheran hires staff

August 19, 2009 Hope Lutheran School has announced a new addition to its teaching staff. Part-time teacher’s assistant Betsy Tucker, who previously owned Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Center for 27 years in Batesville, joins head teacher Kelly Oster and Kellie Smith, assistant teacher at Hope Lutheran.“Betsy has graciously donated her time for a once-a-week physical education class for the school for the last three years,” said school board member Jennifer Hidy-Pitts.

$5,200 reward offered in arson

August 19, 2009 MELBOURNE — An early morning fire on Aug. 12 destroyed a residence at Riverview North in the Sylamore area, and an investigation has determined that the fire was the result of arson, Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said.The residence owner, Rick Reeves, is offering a $5,200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or person(s) responsible for the arson.Anyone having any information is asked to contact the chief investigator of the Izard County Sheriff’s Department at (870) 368-4203.

School begins

August 19, 2009 In spite of construction work in two busy school zones, “there were no accidents and things went pretty smooth” for the opening of Batesville schools this morning, according to Lt. Gene O’Brien with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office.O’Brien said officers were placed at the constrcution zone area along Harrison Street and Eagle Mountain Boulevard. intersection as well as other school locations to assist traffic if needed. “School resource officers were also out around the schools to help motorists,” he said.

Date set for court

August 19, 2009 LITTLE ROCK — “Not guilty” was the plea entered in federal court Tuesday by Independence County Coroner Hardy Willis.Willis, along with four others, is charged with conspiring to distribute marijuana.According to U.S. District Attorney Jane Duke, four Independence County residents and one with an unknown address were involved in the conspiracy over a 12-year period.

Cave City to resume classes

August 18, 2009 CAVE CITY — Cave City School District, which has an elementary, middle school and high school campus in Cave City and a math and science academy in Evening Shade, will begin classes Wednesday.Planned holidays are Labor Day, Sept. 7; Thanksgiving break, Nov. 25-27; Christmas break, Dec. 19-Jan. 3; spring break, March 22-26; Good Friday, April 2; and Memorial Day, May 31.Superintendent is Steven Green.Cave City elementary principal is Vicki Musick.
