Caverns announce summer schedules

May 19, 2009 MOUNTAIN VIEW — Memorial Day weekend will soon be here, and it marks the opening of Blanchard Springs Caverns’ summer schedule, according to a news release.The caverns will open at 9:30 a.m. and stay open until 6 p.m. All three tours will be offered throughout the day. All tours begin at the Visitor Information Center.

25th annual Trolley day features music, parade

May 19, 2009 SULPHUR ROCK — Perhaps the only festival in America that started from a special postage stamp, Trolley Car Day at Sulphur Rock became an annual event in 1984, a few months after the town’s historic old trolley car was pictured in a commemorative stamp series.A pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at the local fire station will get the celebration under way Saturday, followed by a parade down Main Street at 10.

May 19, 2009 SULPHUR ROCK — When the U.S. Postal Service issued an official commemorative stamp in 1983 to honor the last mule-drawn trolley in the nation, it could have also been a last “thank you” for a mutual partnership more than a century ago.The Sulphur Rock Post Office relied on the trolley to transfer mail and parcels to and from the rail depot, about one-half mile from town. And, the trolley was heavily dependent on the mail contract and business freight to stay in business.

Memorial event well attended

May 19, 2009 ASH FLAT — Every year since their son died, Tommie and Jack Richardson have laid a wreath at the base of the monument after the annual memorial service.This year was the first one Jack Richardson had missed since his son died in 1993.Jack and Tommie Richardson of Ash Flat are the parents of the late Jeff Richardson, who was a Cave City police officer when he died of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while assisting a Sharp County officer in a pursuit in 1993.

Jealous rage causes injury

May 19, 2009 After allegedly catching his girlfriend with another man and sending the interloper to the hospital with injuries, a 24-year-old Batesville man is facing felony charges, according to an affidavit filed with the Independence County Circuit Court Clerk.Detective Jeff Sims with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office said the charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 23 when Mark A. Goodman unexpectedly left work, went to his apartment he sometimes shared with a girlfriend and allegedly found her in bed with another man, later identified as Stephen Wild.

Photo class scheduled for June

May 18, 2009 The Batesville Area Arts Council is planning a basic summer photography class, “just in time for the Fourth of July holiday,” according to council director Colleen Jackson.“The class is designed to give photo enthusiasts information they need for general photography and special holiday events like fireworks on the Fourth,” Jackson said recently.The class, taught by photojournalist Tony McGuffey, will be suitable for film or digital cameras (required) and held from 6-9 p.m. June 26, with a field study trip planned for June 27.

UCA gives scholarship to Concord graduate

May 18, 2009 CONWAY — Paige M. Jeffrey, a graduate of Concord High School, has accepted a Dean’s Scholarship to attend the University of Central Arkansas in Conway this fall.She plans to major in occupational therapy.UCA awards academic scholarships, renewable for seven consecutive semesters, based on ACT scores, grade point average and class rank as well as National Merit and National Achievement competition.She is the daughter of Alan and Dawn Jeffrey of Concord.
