Homecoming planned

September 25, 2009 Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2645 White Drive in Batesville, will celebrate its 116th homecoming Sunday.Services will begin at 10 a.m. with Sunday school, followed by a message by former member Chuck Roach, now a missionary pastor at Libby Road Baptist Mission in Heber Springs.A potluck meal will follow the service.Special music by Precious Seed Music Ministry, which consists of sisters Beth and Clari Dees from Twin Oaks Missionary Baptist Church in East Peoria, Ill., will begin at 2 p.m.

Harding to present ‘Scrooge’

September 25, 2009 SEARCY — Harding University will usher in the holiday season with a comical ghost story for all ages, featuring this year’s Homecoming musical, “Scrooge,” playing at 8 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31.Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Benson Auditorium, and online tickets are available on www.hardingtickets.com. The Benson box office will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Youth contests announced

September 25, 2009 MELBOURNE — The Northcentral Arkansas District Fair will sponsor Youth Day Contests beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 2.The contests are open to FFA members and 4-H Club members from Fulton, Izard, Sharp, Stone, Cleburne and Van Buren counties.The contests include: livestock judging (team and individual), agriculture business management (individual only), entomology (individual) and plant identification (individual).Those not eligible to compete in the district fair who wish to participate as a practice event may contact the event chairman for the desired event.

September 25, 2009 BETHESDA — Sharon Sanders holds up her practice piece and counts the stitches. The beginning row started with 20 but somewhere along the way the rows have narrowed to 19 stitches.“I’ve got to take it all out,” she says, holding up the four-inch by 12-inch piece under the watchful eye of Carolyn Slisher, who puts down her pastel handiwork and takes a look.Sanders explains that the number of stitches had gotten “off,” so she undoes all the work she’d just done, then prepares to cast on (placing the stitches that will be knitted onto the needle) again.

Meeks announces for sheriff position

September 25, 2009 Billy Meeks, Democrat, of Floral who has 20 years of law enforcement experience has announced he is seeking election to the position of sheriff in Independence County.“I have made a career in law enforcement with experience in patrol, investigations, warrants and civil process,” Meeks said. “I have utilized and taken all the training available to myself. Jonesboro man jailed for incest

September 24, 2009 JONESBORO (AP) — Police in Jonesboro say they’ve arrested a 50-year-old Jonesboro man for rape and incest after he allegedly married his 22-year-old daughter.Police say the man was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon. He was expected in Craighead County Circuit Court for a bond hearing today.Police say the man’s ex-wife reported the marriage and abuse last week after being told of it by the alleged victim.A date for the marriage was not released but police reports say the sexual abuse began when the girl was 11.

Police respond to drunk at door

September 24, 2009 Independence County Deputy Colby Markum said he and Cpl. Ernie Gillihan found a drunk man walking in the middle of 15th Street after neighbors complained of him knocking on their door and causing problems.The man was later identified as 25-year-old John Vargas of 15th Street, according to Markum who said, “Cpl. Gillihan told Vargas several times to stop walking in Spanish and in English.”Vargas reportedly ignored orders to stop and walked into a nearby carport and leaned up against a car with his left hand under his shirt.
