June 2, 2009 Singer-songwriter Jim Hightower writes and records songs about Arkansas. He has just finished a new recording, “More Arkansas Stories in Song,” set to be available in Arkansas State Park gift shops by mid June.“I like to think of my music as old time, down home, real life stories of real people,” Hightower said.This is his second recording focusing on songs about the state. He also wrote and recorded “Arkansas Stories in Song” and the sounds of guitar, banjo, mandolin and hammered-dulcimer are plentiful on both compilations.

Board OKs building, nixes produce stand

June 2, 2009 The Batesville Board of Adjustments Monday night continued its firm stand on controlling produce stands inside the city limits.Rodney Shetron came before the board asking for a conditional use permit to allow a drive-up, open-air produce stand behind the Veterans of Foreign Wars club at the corner of Chaney and Myers streets.“Why wouldn’t you want to use the farmer’s market?” commission chairwoman Carma Osborn asked, referring to city facilities across the street from the VFW.

100-plus mph chase leads to trauma center

June 2, 2009 ASH FLAT — The occupants of a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant that led officers across parts of two counties at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour Saturday night are both in Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said.The driver, 30-year-old Cody Smith of Missouri, wrecked the car just south of the Piney Creek bridge at Evening Shade. The Galant wound up in a ravine and was not found for about an hour.

$101,000 raised Unity Fest well attended

June 2, 2009 In just four years, Unity Fest on the River has become one of the biggest fundraisers for a nonprofit organization in Independence County.Saturday’s event raised $101,000 for John 3:16 Ministries, a spiritual-based boot camp for men with drug and alcohol addictions, and drew probably 4,000 people, John 3:16 director Bryan Tuggle estimated.Gov. Mike Beebe was among those at Riverside Park in Batesville, on hand with other dignitaries to help give away a new 2009 red Ford Ranger Sport pickup truck autographed by Mark Martin, one of three big prizes.

Several students accept scholarships to UACCB

June 1, 2009 The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville has awarded scholarships to several area students, announced Melissa Sisco, director of Financial Aid.Chancellor’s ScholarshipSouthside graduate Phillip Reeves has been awarded a Chancellor’s Scholarship. He is the son of Shawnette and Larry Reeves. He plans to seek an associate of science degree in genetics or microbiology and transfer to Lyon College to complete his degree.

Felon charged with having guns

June 1, 2009 Following his arrest for drug possession after a home visit by his parole officers, a Batesville man is now being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an affidavit filed in the Independence County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.According to the document, filed by Detective Rob Leonard of the Independence County Sheriff’s Office, probation and parole officers Jeremy Canard and Sherill Middleton conducted a home visit on 44-year-old Shelby Crabtree at his residence on Rooster Road May 22.

Lee’s Chapel homecoming set

June 1, 2009 SANDTOWN — The annual First Sunday in June Singing and Homecoming at Lee’s Chapel Church and cemetery near Sandtown will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, organizer Keary Landers said.It will begin with congregational singing, followed by bluegrass gospel music. A potluck lunch will be served at noon.After lunch, musician Billy Snow and others will perform gospel tunes.The event will continue until 2 or 3 p.m., Landers said.
