Tuckerman man dies in crash

August 26, 2009 NEWPORT — A 51-year-old Tuckerman man died in a two-vehicle crash about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 67 north of Newport, according to Arkansas State Trooper Doug Cash.Tommy Wayne Emory was driving a 2000 Buick north on Highway 67 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a southbound 1999 Kenworth truck, Cash said.Emory was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County coroner.

Volunteens wrap up summer at WRMC

August 26, 2009 Nineteen teenage volunteers participated in the White River Medical Center Auxiliary-sponsored Volunteen program contributing 1,090 volunteer hours at the hospital this summer. The goal of the program is to expose young adults to health careers and to promote the philosophy of volunteerism, officials said.

Computer glitches discussed

August 26, 2009 Problems with a district court computer system and overtime pay for school resource officers were the topics discussed at an Independence County law enforcement committee meeting Monday night.The committee heard a report from District Judge Chaney Taylor regarding the use of the Arkansas Court Automation Project, a bookkeeping system used by courts to properly disperse court-collected money to appropriate legal divisions.

Handing out funds

August 26, 2009 SIXTEENTH JUDICIAL PROSECUTOR and Drug Task Force Director Don McSpadden recently distributed monies seized from drug dealers or from the most recent DTF seizure sale. Nine law enforcement agencies in the five-county district received monies. Other agencies in the district will receive equipment for safety and other law enforcement purposes from the prosecuting attorney’s portion of the sale and seizures.

Hutchison announces for District 82

August 26, 2009 EVENING SHADE — Robert Hutchison (D) has announced he is seeking election to the Arkansas House of Representatives in District 82.The seat is currently held by Curren Everett, who is restricted by term limits from running for re-election to the House seat and is seeking the District 10 position for the Senate. District 82 includes all of Fulton County and portions of Baxter and Sharp Counties. The primary election will be held May 18, 2010 and the General Election will be November 2010.

One resigns from HDC

August 26, 2009 One person has resigned from the city’s Historic District Commission, which is currently embroiled in a controversy with a downtown business over a window.Bill Olson has resigned, Mayor Rick Elumbaugh said Tuesday night at the Batesville City Council, and the city will be looking to replace him. Three charged with raping mentally challenged girl

August 26, 2009 WALNUT RIDGE — Lawyers were appointed during a court hearing Monday for three Smithville residents who were charged July 23 with allegedly raping a 17-year-old mentally challenged girl, according to sheriff’s investigator Capt. Jody Dotson.The case was set for trial in the Nov. 2-13 Lawrence County Circuit Court jury term.

Stolen four-wheeler recovered

August 25, 2009 A Honda four-wheeler reported stolen in June was recovered recently during a traffic stop by state police, according to an affidavit in the Independence County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office by sheriff’s detective Brent Everett.According to Everett, the 2005 ATV was stolen from a shed behind the residence of Dewayne Beeler on Meadow Lake Road on June 21.
