Arkansas Craft School announces plans for summer programs

May 15, 2009 MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Arkansas Craft School, has announced plans to begin immediately to develop wood, fiber and pottery teaching studios and outfit them with basic equipment in the downtown area of Mountain View. A warehouse on Main Street will be renovated and is projected to be in use by mid-July, said Wright Pillow, executive director. He also announced that major funding has been received for a scholarship fund that will provide financial support to all participants in the craft school programs and courses based on need and/or future contribution to the craft economy.

Local students serve as pages

May 15, 2009 LITTLE ROCK — Two more area students have been serving as House pages at the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock recently. They served as pages to James McLean.Thirteen-year-old Halle Rush of Batesville is in the eighth grade at Batesville Junior High School. She is the daughter of Mark and Lolita Rush. She enjoys cross-country, cheerleading, track, softball and all church activities.Emily Barber, 14, the daughter of Lannie and Cindy Barber of Batesville, is also in the eighth grade at Batesville Junior High School.

Man arrested for allegedly shooting at family members

May 15, 2009 A Batesville man is being charged with five counts of felony aggravated assault after officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance with shots fired at his home on May 11.The charges against 28-year-old Christopher J. Williams were filed in the Independence County Circuit Court, according to an affidavit by Independence County Detective Mike Mundy.Mundy said that on May 11, deputies were sent to Williams’ home after police dispatch reported a domestic violence call in which they could hear gunshots in the background.

McDaniel proposes to air PSA statewide

May 15, 2009 Depression and thoughts of suicide can be happening to anyone and warning signs are not something that appear overnight. That’s the message Batesville High students Megan Holifield, Briley Burdin and Archie Lewallen hope others will get from watching “Anyone,” their video, which recently won first place at the seventh annual Attorney General’s Public Service Announcement competition.

Agencies still searching river

May 15, 2009 The search will resume today on the White River in the hopes of finding a Batesville man who disappeared following a boating accident on Saturday.Office of Emergency Management Director Glen Willis said this morning that a schedule had been worked out to share river patrol duties with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Wildlife Officers in the search for 30-year-old Aaron Marks.“Game and Fish will be making runs up the river this morning,” he said. “We (OEM), or the Batesville Fire Department, will do the checking this afternoon.”

Benefit account set up for young girl with brain tumor

May 15, 2009 An account has been set up to help with medical expenses for Abby Conner, who has been diagnosed with gliomatosis cerebri, a rare form of a brain tumor that is inoperable.Abby is the 3-year-old daughter of Jason and Morgan Conner of Southside. The family has made several trips, some out of state, to visit doctors, including just this week, Houston.The account is at Citizens Bank under the name of Abby Conner Medical Fund, and donations may be made at any branch.

Country club, motorcycle shop report burglaries

May 15, 2009 A maintenance shop and storage shed at the Batesville Country Club were the targets of choice for burglars Wednesday night, according to local authorities.Mark Higginbottom told deputies Thursday morning that someone had kicked in the door to the buildings to gain entry and then opened overhead doors from the inside.Among the items taken were a Lincoln arc welder, a Napa battery charger, two Stihl grass cutters, cutting torch, air compressor, McCulloch gas hedge trimmer, Stihl chain saw and miscellaneous hand tools.

May 15, 2009 CUSHMAN — The last Bulldogs are graduating tonight, and they’re going out with a bang.The 7 p.m. ceremony ends with a fireworks display.Valedictorian Kaisha Ferrell and honor graduates Jakki Tomlinson and Whitney Conyers have been at Cushman since kindergarten.
