Bead makers to demonstrate craft

October 1, 2009 Sage and Tom Holland’s handmade glass beads will be on display in the Mabee-Simpson Library lobby on the Lyon College campus Oct. 1-9. They will demonstrate bead making at the library at 7 p.m. Oct. 8.Sage and Tom Holland have each been developing the Art of Glass Bead making for over 20 years. Sage began in Washington state and Tom here in Arkansas. Tom received his bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts from Southeast and Northwest Missouri State University in 1977 and 1979, while Sage went into the arts through life experience modes.

Firefighter meeting is tonight

October 1, 2009 SULPHUR ROCK — The Sulphur Rock Fire Department will have its annual meeting at 6:30 tonight in the fire station. The purpose of the meeting is to fill three board member seats and to elect officers to the board, a fire chief and assistant fire chiefs.The meeting is open to everyone in the Sulphur Rock fire district.

Chamber seeks nominations

October 1, 2009 The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce board is seeking nominations for board membership. The nominee must be from an organization that is currently a member of the chamber and must be willing to exert effort and time in developing the chamber to its fullest potential, said Crystal Johnson, chamber president and CEO.Time commitments include activities such as monthly board meetings held at 7 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month and participation at other events including business after hours, ribbon cutting ceremonies and grand openings.

Newport man dies in crash

October 1, 2009 A 69-year-old Newport man died in a one vehicle crash around 4:40 Wednesday afternoon on Highway 224 at Garfield Street, Newport Patrolman Chris McClellan said.According to McClellan, Donald G. Davis was traveling west on Highway 224 near Garland St. when he ran off the left side of the road and went into a ditch. Davis’ 2000 Oldsmobile then rolled twice and came to rest at the intersection of Garfield and Highway 224.Weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the accident, but Davis was not wearing his seat belt, McClellan said.

Volunteer meeting slated

October 1, 2009 The North Central Volunteer Network will hold its next quarterly meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Batesville Area Arts Council, 246 E. Main St. Lunch is brown bag.Guest speaker Bonnie Johnson, attorney with Williams & Anderson PLC, will give a program entitled “Legal Issues Facing Volunteer Programs.”The meeting is open to volunteer coordinators and anyone who is interested in volunteerism and volunteer management. The group is focused on offering opportunities for networking and sharing ideas for successful volunteer engagement, organizers said.

$450,000 awarded — New fire training facility to be built at UACCB

October 1, 2009 Independence County has been awarded nearly a half million dollars to move the fire training center.Plans are to use the $450,000 grant to move the White River Firefighters Training Center to the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville.

100 New Jobs — Mabry: DHS call center will be first, only in state

October 1, 2009 Batesville has been selected to receive a call center that will bring 100 jobs.Ed Mabry, director of the Independence County Economic Development Commission, and Gov. Mike Beebe made the announcement this morning. The processing and call center will be for the Department of Human Services and people from all over the state can call and get processed for DHS services. This, Mabry told the Guard, would save on walk-ins.

Police capture escapee

September 30, 2009 FORT SMITH (AP) — Authorities say a convicted felon who escaped from a Crawford County transport van has been recaptured.The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office says that 46-year-old William McCoy was arrested Sunday after an Arkansas State Police Trooper found him in a stolen car in Madison County.Authorities say McCoy apparently escaped from the transport van after he slipped out a back window. He eluded authorities for nearly two weeks.

September 30, 2009 Weston Music Studio will present a master class with Dr. Ian Hominick of the University of Mississippi from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Cottage Market, located at 1365 College St. in Batesville.Area youth who will be featured include Nicholas Czerwinski, Hannah Cruse, Katie Cruse, Aaron Dowell, Josie McCann, Ronnie McCann, Crystal Qian, Sean Roulier, Clair Sonnier, Louis Sonnier and Annie Sonnier.They will perform classical piano compositions by Mozart, Rachmaninov, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Janocek, Clementi, Smetana and others.
