Graduate aims to pay it forward

Death probe continues

July 21, 2009 WALNUT RIDGE — Lawrence County authorities say no bullet casing or other evidence was found near the house where an 11-year-old boy was shot in the head Saturday.The boy, Jace Freeman — who would have turned 12 on Thursday — died about 18 hours later at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.Family members also told investigators no firearms were in the house.The bullet of an unknown caliber struck Jace near the right temple while he was playing with his 13-year-old brother, Dyllon, in their grandmother’s yard at 1645 S. Highway 115, Smithville.

Body found

July 21, 2009 HARDY — The body of a missing man on Spring River was spotted from a helicopter Monday as it was arriving to assist in the search.The helicopter was flying to the main search area when the crew spotted the body of 54-year-old Steve McPherson down river from the search area, according to Hardy Police Chief Ernie Rose.McPherson was reported missing Saturday during a float trip on the river. Authorities said McPherson either fell into the river or went in on his own.

Grant will fund tours

July 20, 2009 Old Independence Regional Museum recently received a $900 grant from a private donor to fund a new community outreach education program the museum developed for the 2009-2010 school year, said Amanda Nikkel, education and volunteer coordinator.“This program has been created to encourage public schools to take advantage of the regional educational opportunities that the museum has to offer,” she said.

Stray bullet kills child

July 20, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Authorities say an 11-year-old Smithville boy died at Arkansas Children’s Hospital about 18 hours after being hit by a bullet outside his home.Pulaski County Coroner Garland Camper said Jace Freeman, son of Tammy Freeman, died about 1:30 p.m. Sunday.Camper said the boy was playing with his siblings and other relatives about 7:30 p.m. Saturday when his parents saw him collapse. He was flown to the Little Rock hospital where officials said he had a gunshot wound to the head.
