Panel OKs scholarship rules

November 4, 2009 FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved rules that will govern scholarships funded by the new Arkansas lottery.The panel took the action on Friday amid concerns that the plan places too much emphasis on current high school students preparing to enter college.The board classified current college students who enrolled directly after high school as nontraditional students, ignoring objections from members of the lottery’s legislative oversight committee.

State revenues plunge $17.8M below estimates

November 4, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Arkansas collected $17.8 million less in revenue than expected last month, finance officials said Tuesday, and state agencies said they planned mainly to cut supplies or not fill vacant positions to trim their budgets.The drop in individual, sales and corporate income tax collections showed that the Arkansas economy was “unsettled,” said Department of Finance and Administration Director Richard Weiss.

House Democrats clear way for health care vote

November 4, 2009 WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats cleared the way today for a pivotal vote on health care overhaul as early as the weekend, after tweaking their 1,900-page bill to crack down harder on insurance companies.“Americans are ready for comprehensive health insurance reform and the House will soon act,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement that accompanied dozens of last-minute changes to the bill Tuesday night.Publication of the changes started a 72-hour legislative clock, meaning that a floor vote could take place as early as Saturday.

November 4, 2009 Norfolk, Va. — Navy Seaman Recruit Hannah Q. McGough, daughter of Mary A. and Floyd M. McGough of Floral, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.During the eight-week program, McGough completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
