September 7, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Democrats say they’re preparing for a primary to select a nominee for a vacant state Senate seat.Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Todd Turner told Gov. Mike Beebe in a letter dated Thursday that the party will begin preparing for a primary for the Senate seat vacated by Sharon Trusty of Russellville. Trusty announced last month she was leaving the Senate for family reasons.

Library moves forward with restoration

September 7, 2009 Through a restoration effort, restrooms at the Independence County Library are on their way to being more handicap-accessible.The library board agreed Thursday to hire Larry Bolin and B.V. Builders of Batesville to renovate the bathrooms of the building which has housed the library for more than 30 years.Other businesses that placed bids were Lusk Construction, LLC, M&A Jones Construction Co. Inc. and Smith Plumbing. B.V.’s bid was for $39,000.

September 7, 2009 SALEM — A Viola man who had just picked up his 2-year-old son from the baby sitter’s was shot to death in the cab of his truck at close range before reaching home, with the child still strapped into a safety seat.Joseph L. Clifton, 33, had been working with other men to repair a Bush Hog at his father-in-law’s shop near Viola before going to the baby sitter’s house, Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger said.

Jacksonville to bid for state fair

September 4, 2009 JACKSONVILLE (AP) — Jacksonville City Council members have voted to propose a 400-plus-acre tract there as the new home for the Arkansas State Fair.Mayor Gary Fletcher told council members Thursday night he expects the city’s offer to be among 15 proposals to lure the State Fair from its existing home on Roosevelt Road in Little Rock. The tract in Jacksonville is at the southeast corner of Wooten Road and Interstate 440. Much of the land is owned by Entergy Corp., and Fletcher says the city is currently negotiating to acquire the property.
