Extra rain helping, hurting hay growers

August 12, 2009 PINE  BLUFF — Homeowners lamenting their wildly growing lawns and the lack of dry weather to cut them can empathize with the state’s hay growers.“Their hay crops are needing to be harvested and it just can’t get harvested,” said Don Plunkett, Jefferson County Extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. “A lot of hay is getting bigger and bigger and losing quality.”

Melbourne hires staff

August 12, 2009 MELBOURNE — The Melbourne School board recognized member Danny Taylor with a plaque of appreciation Monday night during a meeting which was called in order to hire a new kindergarten teacher before classes begin Aug. 19.Taylor has been a member of the board of directors for 11 years. While board agreed to hire Pam Bullington as a kindergarten teacher, it also hired Bob Bailey as an architect for the high school’s new classroom addition, a project which the board agreed to start accepting bids on.

Stracener, Usserys win trophies at car show

August 12, 2009 The River City Cruisers annual car show was held Saturday at Mark Martin Ford, located on Highway 167 South in Batesville.More than 120 cars were on display, with participants from Fort Smith, the Little Rock area, Mountain Home, West Plains, Mo., Tulsa, Okla., and other areas.The best of show trophy went to Tommy Stracener of Jonesboro, with a “body off” restoration of a 1950 Chevrolet pickup. It received an overall score of 97 points of a possible 100.

NCARED selects Web designer for Naturally Ozark Web site

August 12, 2009 Flippin — The North Central Arkansas Economic Development is maintaining its momentum by selecting a Web design group to design, construct and host the recently approved Naturally Ozark Web site, according to a news release from Rich Fischer of Calico Rock, Creative Economy Team chairman.During its regular August meeting held in Flippin, the NCARED board selected the DINA Project of UALR’s Institute for Economic Advancement (IEA), led by current director, Atherton Hiett.

Extension office to hold weight loss class series

Lake Charles sets WW2 event

August 12, 2009 POWHATAN — Lake Charles State Park will be the site Sept. 12 for a World War II reenactment.Living history will be going on throughout the day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A battle reenactment is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday. The park staff wants to personally invite any World War II veterans to attend to be recognized for their service. This event is to honor all who served in World War II. Veterans, family members and friends are encouraged to share their story.

50-mile yard sale planned

August 12, 2009 CALICO ROCK — The Calico Rock/Pineville Chamber of Commerce will present the “Heavenly Highways Yard Sale” Sept. 11 and 12.The sale will be along Highway 5 from Mountain View to Calico Rock then loop onto Highway 56 to Highway 177, going through Pineville, all the way to Salesville and back down to Calico on route 177 South.
