Trash schedule to change

November 24, 2009 There will be no county trash or recycling pickup on Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the Independence County Judge’s Office. Arson suspected in trailer fire

November 24, 2009 Police and fire officials suspect arson in the fire that destroyed a vacant mobile home in the Southside community early Monday morning.The fire, at 124 Jones Drive, reportedly started at the front door of a trailer that had been vacant for several years and didn’t have any utilities turned on.A neighbor told police that just before the fire trucks showed up he saw a pickup truck speed away from the area and gave police a description.According to police reports, the mobile home is owned by Frank Foll.The incident remains under investigation.

Memorial service scheduled

Board to discuss lighting, hiring

November 24, 2009 CAVE CITY — The Cave City School Board will meet at 6:30 tonight in the Cave City Elementary Library to consider proposals for lighting at a planned new football complex, according to an agenda for the meeting.During a personnel session, the directors will consider a resignation from a classified employee and discuss possible hirings.Approval of a 2007-08 legislative audit report will be considered and a monthly financial report will be reviewed.The board will also consider an amendment to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus funds) plan.

Funeral home will present Holiday Memorial Program

November 24, 2009 NEWPORT — After a loved one dies, the holidays are tough, especially that first year. To help family and friends cope, Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home will host its ninth annual Holiday Memorial Program at 2 p.m. Sunday.Jan Jackson Maris created the program in 2001 to help families remember their loved one. The first year about 40 people came, but now the event averages about 100 people in attendance.The program is open to everyone, whether a loved one died this year or in previous years, or whether the family used any of Jackson’s facilities or another funeral home.

Turkey Bash motocross races set for this weekend in historic O’Neal Bottoms

November 24, 2009 BETHESDA — The 2009 Turkey Bash motocross races will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday at O’Neal Bottoms MX west of Bethesda, according to a news release.Spectators are invited to the American Motocross Association event.A weekend pass is $12. Those wishing to attend only Saturday’s events or Sunday’s events will be admitted for $8 per day, on those days only. A Three Moto Format Event will be Friday. The entry fee is $15 per rider, with gates opening at 9 a.m. and practice from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
