Tobacco store robber flees empty-handed

November 20, 2009 An armed robber fled a Westside business empty-handed Thursday night after he was unable to open the cash register, according to local authorities.Mary C. Sullivan, a clerk at Tobacco Warehouse #8, at 810 N. Central Ave., said she was getting ready to take out the trash around 7 p.m. when a man walked up and pointed a gun at her and demanded money.

Feds OK breakup to cut costs

November 19, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Federal regulators have authorized Entergy Corp.’s utilities in two states to leave a multi-state agreement — a move expected to save money for ratepayers in Arkansas.The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accepted requests today by Entergy Arkansas and Entergy Mississippi to leave a pact with Entergy companies in Louisiana and Texas. Entergy Arkansas plans to exit in December 2013 while Entergy Mississippi wants to leave in 2015.

Graceland to have traditional holiday decorations

November 19, 2009 MEMPHIS (AP) — Singer Richard Marx and children from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis will flip the switch Friday to begin the holiday season at Graceland.Elvis Presley’s home will include traditional decorations, hundreds of blue lights along the driveway, a life-size Nativity scene, Santa and his sleigh and other holiday items originally displayed at Graceland by Elvis and his family.

Ex-Murphy exec convicted

November 19, 2009 EL DORADO (AP) — A former executive at Murphy USA has been convicted of three felony theft counts by a jury that recommended 10 years’ probation and a $30,000 fine.Prosecutors said Paul Wells, former vice president of marketing at Murphy USA, designed a scheme in which a company begun by his wife double-billed Murphy for $54,000 worth of T-shirts promoting the oil refining and marketing company.After Tuesday’s verdicts and sentence recommendations, Circuit Judge Hamilton Singleton set Wells’ sentencing for Dec. 3.
