Souper Bowl Saturday set

January 29, 2010 The Batesville Area Arts Council is gearing up for its annual “Souper Bowl Saturday” fundraiser scheduled for Feb. 6.The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and feature for sale some of the best homemade soup from the great cooks of Batesville, according to a news release.The soup will be sold by the quart, $6, and the proceeds will go to support the Arts in Education program, the Batesville Community Theatre, and other programs offered by BAAC.

Football stadium expected completed for new season

January 29, 2010 CAVE CITY — Bidding for a new football stadium at Cave City High School is expected to take place early next month and the facility hopefully will be completed by Aug. 1, in time for the upcoming football season, patrons attending a public hearing concerning the district’s 2010 Master Plan were told last week.

‘Operation Newport’ takes seven into custody on cocaine charge

January 29, 2010 LITTLE ROCK — Seven people were taken into custody Thursday on warrants following an indictment returned Jan. 6.The announcement was made by Jane W. Duke, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas; Assistant Special Agent in Charge William J. Bryant with the Little Rock Field Office of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas.

Fire destroys Newark homes; woman injured

January 29, 2010 A woman crawling through the window of her burning home was assisted by a passing motorist Thursday afternoon and later transported to a Little Rock hospital for burns to most of her body, according to Newark Fire Chief James Langston.The woman’s identity is not certain at this time because of federal laws restricting release of information from medical records, according to Langston.The fire at 20 Macedonia Road was reported around 5 p.m. and Newark firefighters were on the scene with three trucks and a dozen firefighters until about 9 p.m., he said.

Woman sentenced

January 29, 2010 NEWPORT — It took a jury only 24 minutes to sentence a Hardy woman to 40 years in connection with an armed robbery at the Old River Package Store in Elgin.According to Prosecutor Henry Boyce, Tracie Lynn Snider, 37, of Hardy was tried in Jackson County Circuit Court before a jury of nine women and three men. In the two-day trial that concluded Wednesday, Snider was convicted of participating in the January 2009 robbery. She was represented by R.T. Starken of Hardy.

Snow, sleet blanket area

January 29, 2010 A year ago today thousands of people woke up without power.As of this morning history has yet to repeat itself. Les Frensley with Entergy Arkansas said this morning there have been no problems and not many outages reported after a winter storm moving east blew across Arkansas Thursday night.“We started out pretty well,” Frensley told the Guard. As of 9 a.m. crews were working to restore power to about five homes in the Cave City area, however there were no outages reported in Batesville.

Carl Garner honored

January 29, 2010 HEBER SPRINGS — William Carl Garner was inducted into the “Hall of Honor” during the 54th annual Area Chamber of Commerce banquet here Tuesday evening at Hensley’s Restaurant.Garner, 94, was cited for his leadership and environmental contributions during the 51 years he has lived and worked on Greers Ferry Lake.Former President Bill Clinton and Congressman Marion Berry sent video congratulatory remarks and several local and area citizens explained how Garner has played a major role in the growth and betterment of the lake region.

Man calls jail staff wants to be arrested

January 28, 2010 An accident victim who allegedly called the cops to come arrest him got his wish early Wednesday morning.Independence County Deputy Colby Markum said he was dispatched to the wreck in front of the Newark Town and Country grocery store around 1:15 a.m. “While en route to the accident, the county jail advised me over the radio that the subject in the accident had called the jail and advised he was intoxicated and wanted the police to hurry up and get him so he could go to jail,” Markum said.
