February 4, 2010 A benefit account has been established at two banks for a woman who was seriously burned in a house fire last week.Molly Tunstall, 42, suffered burns on more than half of her body in a fire at 20 Macedonia Road last Thursday afternoon. She was home alone at the time of the fire, which was reported around 5 p.m.She is now in stable condition in the burn unit at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, according to her brother, Layman “Boddy” Tunstall.“If that man hadn’t pulled her from the window, she would have died,” he said. “We’re all just in shock.”

County may be featured on CNN, Fox networks

February 4, 2010 A national film crew wants to come to Independence County and do a TV feature clip on the county’s economic growth and the opportunities available to businesses looking for places to expand or establish home offices.Economic Development Commission Director Ed Mabry said his office first learned of the interest by the film crew about three weeks ago. “I don’t know where they heard about us, but they called and said they wanted to do a promotional TV clip to use on CNN and Fox networks,” Mabry said.

Principal touts accomplishments

February 3, 2010 Batesville Junior High School has been a happening place this past semester. We started the academic year with a pool party to welcome incoming seventh-graders. Our newly formed organization, Pioneers in Action, was also there to welcome them.Other honors and happenings at BJHS:Our Quiz Bowl Team won first place in the North Arkansas Educational Service Center tournament.The Archery Club has been expanded to BJHS.

Firm acquires Ranger plant

February 3, 2010 FLIPPIN (AP) — A private equity firm closed Tuesday on the purchase of Wood Manufacturing Inc., the maker of Ranger Boats, whose factory in Flippin is the largest employer in Marion County.The purchase of Minneapolis-based Genmar Holdings Inc. was approved last month in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, clearing the way for Platinum Equity of Beverly Hills, Calif., to buy Wood and other boat lines owned by Genmar.The companies did not disclose a purchase price.Genmar earlier said that before the recession sales had been at between $1.1 billion and $1.2 billion annually.

Grant applications due March 15; WRPDD to host training session

Chamber has new chairman

February 3, 2010 Gary Bebow, CEO of White River Health System, will serve as chairman of the board of the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce for 2010-11. He has been a chamber board member for the past three years and replaces prior chairwoman Stacy Gunderman, who held the post for the previous 18 months.

Optimists to honor teens
