JPs buy building

January 8, 2010 MELBOURNE — It took one more vote to get the $240,000 check cut.They got it.Tuesday night the Izard County Quorum Court once again voted to purchase the now-empty building that once housed a drug store for $240,000.The deciding vote was cast by Neil Olan, who had been very vocal at the December special meeting. Still voting against were Justices Justin Sanders, James Simmons and Wayne Borne with Glendon Everett, Karla Rush, Ken Bachman, Eric Smith and James Elbert in favor.

Residents evacuated

January 8, 2010 SOUTHSIDE — Mary Louise Pittman was looking forward to going home, getting into her pajamas and watching the Alabama-Texas game on television.Instead, she got a 30-plus mile drive out of her way and an overnight stay at a local motel.Pittman was one of the residents of Denison Heights evacuated after a propane tanker truck overturned less than a mile away on Ramsey Mountain Thursday afternoon.

Alert system put to test by Batesville schools

January 8, 2010 When an 18-wheeler carrying propane overturned on top of Ramsey Mountain Thursday afternoon and forced evacuations in a 1-mile radius and the re-routing of traffic through Newark, Batesville School District was prepared.It was an emergency situation that could have turned chaotic for the district with floods of calls coming in from concerned parents and guardians worried about their children making it home from school, but it wasn’t thanks to Alert Now, Superintendent Ted Hall said this morning.

Rollover closes road

January 8, 2010 Everyone within a 1-mile range of the top of Ramsey Mountain near Batesville was evacuated late Thursday afternoon when an 18-wheeler propane truck overturned and sprung a leak.Simon Thombeni, 37, of Batesville was driving a 2001 Peterbilt tractor pulling a tanker loaded with 9,600 gallons of propane up the mountain on Highway 167 around 3:20 p.m. when his rig turned over, according to Arkansas State Police Trooper Ronnie Qualls.

Alleged burglars caught

January 7, 2010 Two Independence County men who allegedly targeted a rural home to burglarize are in jail and facing felony charges after the homeowner recognized one of them and followed their vehicle.A court affidavit filed by Independence County Detective Robert Moser said that on Dec. 29, police were dispatched to Owl Lane where a residential burglary was in progress and while on the way the homeowner informed police that two men had run from the home and fled in a blue Chevrolet truck.

Sugg: Calico Rock area embraces true spirit of Christmas

January 7, 2010 CALICO ROCK — This year’s Toys for Tots project, sponsored by the Calico Rock/Pineville Chamber of Commerce, provided toys, clothing and toiletries to 65 local children, according to Kedra Sugg with the chamber.“Most of us think of Christmas as a time for giving and getting gifts from family and friends, but many in this community give of their time and money to children they don’t even know,” Sugg said, adding that there some people who “went the extra mile.”
