Pharmacy to have free flu shots

January 18, 2010 Oak Park Pharmacy at 1305 White Drive will provide free H1N1 (swine) flu shots from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday.Staff from the Arkansas Department of Health will administer the shots.

Two jailed on drug charges

January 18, 2010 ASH FLAT — Cheri Lynn Lamb of Hardy, wanted on drug charges in Sharp County, was arrested on those charges Thursday in Green County when a jailer there recognized her from a description that had been broadcast, Sharp County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Mark Counts said Friday.Her bond was set at $35,000 by District Judge Mark Johnson and she was still in jail in Sharp County Friday morning.

Master plan to be discussed

January 18, 2010 CAVE CITY — The Cave City School Board will meet at 7 tonight in the Cave City Elementary Library for a master plan public hearing followed by consideration of the proposed master plan, according to an agenda for the meeting.The directors will also consider the superintendent’s contract extension and a student transfer request.

Cherokee woman faces felony drug charge

January 18, 2010 MELBOURNE — A Cherokee Village woman was arrested Jan. 11 on an Izard County warrant for a felony drug charge. Sony Elise Wiggins, 39, was charged with possession of controlled substance-ecstasy. She posted a $50,000 bond and was given a date to appear in Izard County Circuit Court.In other arrests:

Camp Crossed Arrows to get $800,000 renovation

January 18, 2010 JONESBORO — Girl Scouts Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas recently kicked off a campaign to raise money for renovations to Camp Crossed Arrows near Floral, said Kendall Thornton, the group’s director of communicationsTo accommodate additional residency at summer camps at the facility, the organization plans to raise $800,000 for the camp that has been in the Girl Scout family since 1964.

Furs, pearls, shells were big businesses

January 18, 2010 Furs, pearls and mussel shell button making were big businesses in Batesville in the early to mid 20th century, and former mayor Joe Biard’s family was involved in all of those — and several others.Biard’s father, Ernest, owned or co-owned seven businesses in Batesville, Biard told an audience during a recent Old Independence Regional Museum presentation.“His thinking was that he’d get a business started and then because he couldn’t manage them all by himself, he’d then take in a partner,” Biard said

Dr. King honored at local church

January 18, 2010  The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church honored the birthday of noted slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday with a special “Keepers of the Dream” program.The program featured musical selections from the Batesville Youth Praise Team as well as a song from Alicia Harris, who was accompanied by Debbie Tripp on the piano.Independence County Judge Bill Hicks greeted the large crowd that gathered to reflect on the dreams of King.
