Committees to discuss budget

October 13, 2009 The following Independence County Quorum Court committee will meet tonight to review and discuss the coming budgets for 2010: Law Enforcement Committee, this includes all sheriff’s department related budgets, jail, juvenile detention, etc.The public meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the juvenile courtroom of the Independence County Library building at Third and Main streets.

UACCB board to meet; legislators to be honored

October 13, 2009 The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville Board of Visitors will meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Independence Hall.A business after hours/legislative reception will follow the meeting.The agenda includes updates on the Nursing and Allied Health Building campaign, a call training center at Cushman, fall enrollment, construction, accreditation and various events; introduction of new employees; and Pioneer Institution in the Pathways Demonstration Project.

UACCB hires three to work with nursing program

October 13, 2009 The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville has announced three recent hirings.Kelly Stone and Misty Vanemburg have been hired to teach in the practical nursing program, and Nicole Gay has been hired to teach the online registered nursing program.Stone obtained her bachelor of science degree from the School of Nursing at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. She has 24 years of nursing experience in obstetrics and medical surgical nursing and seven years of military nursing experience with the U.S. Air Force.

JPs approve computer software, resource officer

October 13, 2009 Before getting down to the business of dealing with expenditures and budget matters Monday night, the Independence County Quorum Court heard good news from Independence County Economic Development Director Ed Mabry.In his monthly report Mabry highlighted some recent activities including the announcement of a Department of Human Services call center that will be locating in Batesville next year and bring 100 new jobs to the community.A brief report was also heard from Gary Underwood with the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the upcoming 2010 Census.

Level 3 sex offender released from prison

October 13, 2009 MELBOURNE — Joseph C. Mitchell, recently released from prison, is residing on County Road 20 (Newburg Road) about 1.1 miles from the intersection of Newburg Road and Arkansas Highway 9 in Melbourne, the Izard County Sheriff’s Department has announced.Sheriff Tate Lawrence said the department is releasing information pursuant to Act 989 of 1997 and amendments of 2006 regarding sex offenders.

Unchartered territory – Batesville applies for charter status

October 13, 2009 When Batesville School District began considering the idea of a charter, it looked at many options.It considered a school-within-a-school charter.It contemplated a charter that would have included grades 7-12.In a process that is continually evolving, Batesville is now hoping to be approved for a charter for only grades 7-9.Batesville is one of five districts in the state that sent a letter to the Arkansas Department of Education, notifying of its intent to operate as a charter beginning the 2010-11 school year, if approved.

1st Duggar grandchild arrives

October 12, 2009 SPRINGDALE (AP) — The next generation of Duggars has arrived.According to The Learning Channel, Mackynzie Renee Duggar was born at 6:39 p.m. on Thursday. Mackynzie is the first child of Josh and Anna Duggar and the first grandchild for Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars of TLC’s “18 Kids and Counting.”Mackynzie was born as Michelle Duggar is pregnant with her 19th child, due in March. Josh, the oldest Duggar, is 21. He and Anna married last fall.The network says Anna Duggar and Mackynzie are doing well. The baby weighed 8 pounds and was 19.5 inches long.

Car for sale; asking price is $1.25M

October 12, 2009 JONESBORO (AP) — For sale in Jonesboro a silver, 2006 Bugatti Veyron. It has one previous owner and just 500 driven miles.The asking price is $1.25 million.Elite Autos owner Shelby Smith says he already has two prospective buyers.The Bugatti is one of only 200 ever made and one of only about 15 in the United States.The car can reach a top speed of 253 miles per hour, but would run out of gas in 12 minutes and would wear out the tires in 15 minutes.

Two manufacturers locate shops in Arkansas prisons

October 12, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Good help is hard to find, unless that help is doing hard time.Two manufacturers are taking advantage of a program in which they develop factories in Arkansas prisons and put convicts to work at market wages.The workers use their earnings to fund the program, pay child support, fines, restitution and build a nest egg. The companies have a captive labor force and a chance to expand their businesses.
