Kensett cop fired for lying

December 30, 2009 KENSETT (AP) — The Kensett police chief has fired an officer, saying she lied to her colleagues concerning the whereabouts of a person being sought for arrest.Police Chief Jim Dwyer says Sgt. Debra Bailey was fired Dec. 21. He cited her actions during an incident that occurred nine days earlier at a local restaurant.

Jonesboro eyes 20-year plan

December 30, 2009 JONESBORO (AP) — Jonesboro officials are working on developing a comprehensive 20-year plan for the northeast Arkansas town.Mayor Harold Perrin says the goal of the plan is to determine where Jonesboro will be as a city in 20 years. The plan is being developed by a 43-member commission that includes city employees, business leaders, professors, community leaders and four high school students.

Conservation district scholarships offered

December 30, 2009 Local high school students considering a career in an agriculture, environmental science or conservation related career may be interested in applying for a $250 scholarship from the Independence County Conservation district, according to chairman Ed Mabry.“As well as receiving the district scholarship, the winner will be eligible to compete at both the area and state levels,’ Mabry said.The association of conservation districts awards three annual scholarships — $1,000, $750 and $500 — based on students’ essays and oral presentations, he said.

ASU Professor Emeritus Dr. Calvin Smith dies

December 30, 2009 Jonesboro — Dr. C. Calvin Smith, the first African-American faculty member at Arkansas State University, died Dec. 24 in Jonesboro. Smith was 66 years old.Visitation is scheduled for 5-7 tonight at the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday also at the church. The Rev. Curtis Wilson will officiate. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with arrangements handled by Woodard Funeral Home in Jonesboro, (870) 802-0999.

Cave City EHC

December 30, 2009 CAVE CITY — The Cave City Extension Homemakers Club met Dec. 14 at the Cave City Community Center.  Vice President Frances Ball called the meeting to order and the group sang “White Christmas.” Roll Call was “My favorite memory of Christmas as a child.” Six members plus one guest were present. A brief business meeting was conducted and then members adjourned to a Christmas party potluck and gift exchange. After lunch they assembled the Christmas fruit bags for the Head Start Class and wrapped Christmas gifts for the Life Skills Class.

December 30, 2009 The Independence County chapter of the Arkansas State Employees Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 6 in the George Rider Community Room of First Community Bank in Batesville.
