Rural fire ruled arson; suspects sought

March 30, 2010 Fire and police authorities have ruled an early Monday morning Sulphur Rock mobile home fire as an act of arson.Independence County Deputy Brian Luetschwager was called to the home of Mike Shaw at 409 Shamrock Lane shortly before 6 a.m. after Shaw arrived home and discovered his home had been set afire.“Mr. Shaw advised me that he had left around 3 p.m. Sunday and arrived back home around 5:30 a.m. (Monday),” Luetschwager said. “Mr. Shaw said when he pulled up he noticed a light on in the residence that he didn’t remember leaving on.

Cave City duo arrested for drugs

March 30, 2010 ASH FLAT — When Sharp County Deputy Gary Mitchell met a vehicle traveling east on state Highway 230 just before dark Friday, he turned around to stop it because he recognized the driver as Thomas King and knew King had warrants on him out of Batesville.“I turned around to stop the vehicle and I could tell it had gained speed,” Mitchell said. “When I caught up with the vehicle it was passing a car on a double yellow line. King then turned on Grange Road, where I made a traffic stop on the vehicle.”

Wooldridge un-resigns

March 30, 2010 In a letter issued to Independence County Judge Bill Hicks just before 2 p.m. Monday, Independence County Clerk Karen Wooldridge announced that she was rescinding her earlier letter of resignation issued on March 12.In her first letter Wooldridge announced she would be retiring at the end of the year, but since she had some chronic health issues felt that in all fairness to the people of Independence County and the ladies in her office she should step down and let one of them be appointed to finish her term.

Woman charged with giving drugs to 3-month-old baby

March 30, 2010 ASH FLAT — A woman was arrested Friday in Hardy after an alert Sharp County deputy noticed a baby was not acting normally, Sheriff Dale Weaver said on his department’s Web site.Shannon Marie Asher, 30, is charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, a class D felony, and introducing a controlled substance into the body of another person, a class C felony, sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Ken Guidry said this morning.

Morgan to celebrate 80th birthday

Jacksonport to host egg hunt

March 29, 2010 JACKSONPORT — Jacksonport State Park will host its 26th annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday. The rain date is 2 p.m. Sunday. The Easter Bunny will visit with the children before and after the event for pictures. Colorful eggs containing prizes donated by area businesses will be found amongst the candy the Easter Bunny has hidden.

Divorce support offered

March 29, 2010 Batesville First Assembly’s Family Connections will be offering a divorce recovery support group to the public, beginning Thursday.There will be two classes, one for adults and one for children first through fourth grade, held on Thursday evenings.
