Memorial to be held for longtime Heber Springs resident

April 28, 2010 HEBER SPRINGS — A longtime Heber Springs resident will be remembered at 2 p.m. Saturday at a short ceremony and memorial tree planting at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center. Lyon College Philosophy Professor Dr. Martha Beck and honor society students will also plant the Lisa Jayne Butterworth-Davis memorial tree. Davis died in 2008 from ovarian cancer. The memorial ceremony is open to the public. Davis’ husband, Billy Joe, and their son Sam, along with Lyon College are using the event as an opportunity to increase awareness of ovarian cancer.

Fast getaways: Motorcycle, horse reported taken from Newport Rd.

April 28, 2010 Two thefts on Newport Road last week both involved modes of transportation — just widely different kinds. A 2003 Suzuki motorcycle was taken from a residence overnight Sunday. Daniel Martin said he parked the bike between two other vehicles at the residence around midnight and when he came back for it around 11 a.m. Monday it was missing. Martin said the keys were not in the bike when it was stolen. The bike is valued at $5,000, according to Martin.

Bonds set in chase, other LawCo cases

April 28, 2010 WALNUT RIDGE — A $20,000 bond was set Thursday for a Melbourne man who led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase through parts of Craighead, Greene and Lawrence counties one week ago, Lawrence County sheriff’s Capt. Jody Dotson said. The chase began after officers tried to stop Matthew Hawkins, 31, for unauthorized use of a vehicle. Following the chase, in which a deputy’s patrol car was struck by the vehicle Hawkins was driving, Hawkins was charged with aggravated assault, fleeing, criminal mischief, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

Habitat seeks donations for sale

April 28, 2010 Habitat for Humanity of Independence County will host its third annual yard sale to raise money to build the second Independence County Habitat house. The sale will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 424 E. Main St. in Batesville Organizers are now seeking donations. Items may be dropped off at St. Paul’s from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and may include furniture, tools, books, antiques, household items, linens, small appliances, musical instruments, dishes, outdoor furniture, home décor, crafts, cooking utensils, etc. No clothing will be accepted.

Drunk man arrested on playground

April 28, 2010 An allegedly drunk man on a Batesville school ground caught the eye of an off-duty policeman around 4 p.m. Monday. “I was traveling north on Seventh Street beside the Central Elementary School when I noticed a white male wearing a dark ball cap and blue jeans standing behind a cedar tree on the southeast corner of the school yard,” Deputy Dustin Robbins said. “He appeared to duck behind the tree when he noticed that I was watching him; I then pulled into the school parking lot so I could see what he was doing.”

Civil War battle to be re-enacted

April 28, 2010 MELBOURNE — The Seventh Arkansas Volunteer Infantry will recreate the Battle of Lunenburg at 3 p.m. Saturday in the same farm field south of Melbourne where the 1864 battle was fought. The event is open to the public. Led by their color guards, Confederate and Union re-enactors in authentic uniforms will take up positions as five full size cannons take the field. A second re-enactment is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tea Party to have forum

April 28, 2010 MELBOURNE — The Izard County The People Rule Tea Party will be having its third meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Izard County Fairgrounds. Members of the public who are interested in finding ways to decrease the size of our federal government, curtail illegal immigration, decrease taxes, stop the incremental advance of socialism, and restore the United States to its proper foundation as a sovereign Constitutional republic are invited to attend and participate.

Camp Crossed Arrows to re-open

April 28, 2010 A grand re-opening ceremony for Camp Crossed Arrows Girls Scouts camp at Camp Tahkodah will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Events will include an open house, dedication of the new pool, a dedication of the flag pole in honor of camp supporters Randle and Sally Yarberry and the recognition of the Camp Blazers, a group of Girl Scouts that was very active at Camp Crossed Arrows during the 1960s. Girls Scouts will be participating in scavenger hunts, canoeing and archery throughout the day.
