March 26, 2009 Cherokee Village — Amedisys, Inc. recently announced it has acquired White River Medical Center Progressive Home Care in Cherokee Village.Progressive Home Care, now an Amedisys company, will continue serving the area at 195 Hospital Drive and the current staff will remain in place.

Free health conferences offered

March 26, 2009 The Arkansas Department of Health will host four nutrition and physical activity conferences in northeast Arkansas. Registration deadline is next Tuesday.The conferences will open at 8 a.m. with registration and then the programs will begin at 8:30. Continuing education hours will be offered.Jean Blaydes-Madigan, a nationally known neurokinesiologist, speaker, trainer and author, will be the keynote speaker.

Public invited to view NASCAR mural at BRTC

March 26, 2009 POCAHONTAS — The history of NASCAR is featured in the form of a mural painted on the lobby walls of the Automotive Complex located on the campus of Black River Technical College in Pocahontas. For nearly three months this past semester, Dr. Sandy Davis-Baltz, fine arts instructor at BRTC, and her Design I students spent a combined 352 hours creating the NASCAR mural, which will be open for public viewing next week. Davis-Baltz was asked to paint the wall as a class project for one of her studio groups.

Wrong lane use leads to DWI arrest

March 26, 2009 A Pleasant Plains man is facing several traffic charges following an alleged incident of driving in the wrong lane of traffic.Independence County Deputy Dale Jackson said he was dispatched to a possible drunk driver on Highway 167 north around 12:30 this morning and while en route encountered the vehicle, a red Ford Ranger pickup, sitting in the southbound lane.Jackson said he turned around to get behind the truck and as he was making a traffic stop, the truck was traveling south in the northbound lane of the highway.

Concord school making progress

March 26, 2009 CONCORD — The top administrator at Concord school is optimistic the district will be removed from the state’s fiscal distress list within a few months.Any district that is on the list for two years is subject to forced consolidation or annexation with adjoining districts.Concord was put on the list last April.“On June 30, the end of the fiscal year, they (state Department of Education officials) will look at how we end the year and evaluate where we’re at,” said Dr. Mike Davidson, superintendent.
