West Point cadet honored

February 18, 2010 WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadet William Allgood, son of John and Diane Allgood of Batesville, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester, August through December 2009, at the U.S. Military Academy.The earn this distinction, a cadet must maintain a 3.0 average in all courses.Allgood graduated from Batesville High School in 2009.He will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation at West Point.

Board to hold meeting tonight

February 18, 2010 Batesville School Board will hold a special-called meeting at 6 tonight in the conference room of the district administration office at 955 Water St. It will hear from McPherson and Jacobson, an executive recruitment and development company, which will help Batesville School District in its search for a new superintendent.

Cave City to hear EAST program

February 18, 2010 CAVE CITY — The Cave City School Board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Cave City High School Library to hear an EAST program presentation, Superintendent Steven Green said.EAST stands for Environmental and Spatial Technology. The EAST initiative is an educational model that engages students in sophisticated service-learning projects that involve teamwork and cutting-edge technology.The board will also consider administrative contracts, out of state trip requests and amending the school calendar.

March of Dimes to hold rally

February 18, 2010 March of Dimes will hold a “March for Babies” rally from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Farmers Insurance located at 11 Eagle Mountain Blvd., next to Colton’s Steakhouse and Grill in Batesville. Everyone including all team captains, family teams and individual walkers are invited to attend. There will be food, fellowship, March for Babies supplies, and fundraising ideas, March of Dimes community direct Sherry Lamb said.

Southside students win at foreign language festival

February 18, 2010 SOUTHSIDE — Southside High School Spanish students received top scores at Saturday’s regional foreign language festival held at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, according to a news release. Senior Amy Mansfield earned first place in two categories and will compete at the state level. She sang her way to a 97 out of a possible 100 with her rendition of “Te Mando Flores” made popular by Colombian singer Fonseca. She also received a 97 for extemporaneous reading in Spanish.

Burglars hit church, Cord home for guitars

February 18, 2010 Sometime between 8:30 Sunday night and 9 Monday morning someone pried open a door to gain entry into the lobby of the First Assembly of God Church at 20th and Lyon streets in Batesville, according to Jeff Cox, pastor.Cox told Deputy Dustin Robbins that whoever broke in then went into the sound booth and took an electric guitar valued at $200 and an Audiotechnica wireless microphone valued at $300.He said a computer had been unhooked, but was left behind.No suspects were named in the case.

Townsends selling chicken for Haiti relief effort

Weatherford to run for Cushman mayor

February 18, 2010 CUSHMAN — Jean Weatherford of Cushman has announced her candidacy for mayor of Cushman.Weatherford served as secretary/treasurer for Cushman City Council in the mid 1990s but resigned to accept an administrative assistant position with the Foster Grandparent Program at White River Area Agency on Aging in Batesville. She retired from that position in 2003. She joined Cushman Pleasant Valley Cemetery board as secretary/treasurer and has served in that capacity since June 2007. She is a past president of Cushman Alumni Association and the current secretary/treasurer.

Men pushing stolen golf carts are charged with 25 burglaries

February 18, 2010 ASH FLAT — While Sharp County Deputy Gerald Traw was investigating burglaries of camper trailers at River Bend Park just west of Hardy on Tuesday, Cherokee Village officers came across two men pushing golf carts in the village.“While Deputy Traw gathered information on the 25 trailers that had been burglarized ... he learned that two golf carts were missing,” Sheriff Dale Weaver said.
