Armed man gives up
ASH FLAT — Shortly before midnight Friday, a lengthy standoff began between an armed Williford resident and Sharp County sheriff’s officers, Sheriff Mark Counts said.
At 11:22 p.m. Sharp County Central Dispatch received a call from Mary Ferrell who said her neighbor, Eddie Elliott, was drunk and at her residence threatening to kill her and her dogs, said Counts. -
Lyon bagpipers win in Florida
The Lyon College bagpipers are already off to a strong season. The pipers have been to two contests in Florida.
At the first contest in Orlando, Jimmy Bell took the Professional Piper of the Day award, followed by Elliot Smith at his first Professional-level contest. Avens Ridgeway also placed strong in her Grade 1 events and piper Jared Malone took the top prizes in his first Grade 3 contest with Lyon College. Because of her performance, Ridgeway was also extended an invitation to the Sandy Jones Invitational in March. -
Telephone wire, antique violin taken in thefts burglary
Loss of telephone service in the area of Coon Creek and High Rock roads north of Batesville prompted an AT&T service technician to start looking for the trouble Thursday afternoon.
Independence County Deputy Jesse Wilson said when Brisden Slayden drove down Coon Creek Road, he noticed some damaged phone pedestals at the side of the road. One, he said, looked as if it had been struck by a vehicle and the other had copper wire removed. Slayden reportedly said he found a small saw on the ground next to the pedestal. -

A man by the name of Linebarger and another man by the name of Rutledge, both residing south of the river, were arraigned in justice court of R.R. Case Wednesday on a charge of hog stealing and killing a hog belonging to George Moore. The men were acquitted by a jury, the evidence establishing their innocence. -
Judsonia man killed in two-vehicle wreck
James Schneider, 76, of Judsonia was killed in a two-car crash at the Exit 29 on-ramp of Highway 67/167 Saturday afternoon, according to Arkansas State Police Cpl. Royce Denney.
The accident occurred around 5:50 p.m. when Schneider, who was driving his 2007 Ford pickup northbound on Highway 67, rear-ended a Kenworth tractor/trailer rig driven by Charles Gaines, 32, of Searcy.
Denney said that after the impact with the Kenworth, Schneider’s truck then went off the roadway and hit a tree, killing him. Gaines was not injured. -
FNBC donates $10,000 to domestic violence assistance program
ASH FLAT — First National Banking Company of Ash Flat recently donated $10,000 to Spring River Adult/Child Services, also based in Ash Flat, according to a news release from the non profit organization which serves men, women and children affected by domestic violence.
The money will be used for installation of a hard-wired, mandated fire alarm system in Cove House, a shelter for women and their children.
“The assistance of this donation is helping a dream come true,” the release states. -

Paul Curtis, charged with mule stealing, is in the county jail upon failure to make $2,000 bond required after he admitted his guilt. He was arrested Tuesday at Heber Springs and was brought to Batesville by deputy sheriff Hill Hays. He is the only inmate of the county jail now. -

Miss Bessie Fleming, a young lady who lives at Emery, Sharp County, has just taken the oath of mail carrier and will hereafter have charge of the mail route from Emery to Cave City, a distance of 10 miles. Miss Fleming was sworn in by L.D. Holley, postmaster at Emery. She is the third woman in Arkansas to become a rural mail carrier.
Jared Trevathan and Jamie Martin returned this morning from Flint, Mich., where they were shown through the Buick car factory. -

A letter to the Guard from the Mount Etna community stated that hog cholera is raging there and many farmers have lost many head of hogs. J.H. Dobson is said to be the heaviest loser, the disease having claimed 20 head of his hogs. Farm demonstrator J.E. McKell visited the Mount Etna community a few days ago and vaccinated a number of hogs. -
