    You know that feeling you get when you slip your hand inside a coat pocket and find money you didn’t know you had?
    I had the same feeling last week after getting the mail and finding a self-addressed stamped envelope containing an autographed picture from actress Debra Paget.
    It had been nine months or more since I had sent her a letter, in which I  requested an autograph while also telling her how much I enjoyed her acting and movies, most notably, “Love Me Tender” with Elvis Presley.

  • Warrant issued for ex-husband

    Formal charges of terroristic threatening have been filed against a 43-year-old Paris man for threatening to kill his ex-wife who lives in Batesville, according to Independence County Sheriff’s Detective Mike Mundy.
    The warrant was issued Tuesday against James E. Hixson after his ex-wife came to Independence County authorities about a phone call she reportedly had gotten from Hixson.
    On May 22, the woman told police Hixson had called her and threatened to kill her and take their children and that the conversation was on a speakerphone and was overheard by a witness.

  • Relay For Life event raises money, remembers others, celebrates life

    Carlene Jenkins was just 22 years old when doctors told her what no one ever wants to hear.
    It didn’t matter that she was a young wife and mother living in California with her husband, Simon, or that her parents and siblings were back in Batesville.
    Cancer didn’t care.
    Jenkins can’t remember what really went through her mind when doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer in 1956. She only remembers thinking of her children and what life would be like for them without their mother.
    “I had two babies; I was worried about them,” she said.

    A shooting range at Pfeiffer became another step closer to reality Wednesday, as the Independence County Quorum Court Parks and Recreation Committee met to discuss the proposal.
    County Judge Bill Hicks said he met with the Industrial Development Commission earlier in the day, and the vote was four to one in favor of accepting the county’s bid of $100,000.
