  • Several students accept scholarships to UACCB

    The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville has awarded scholarships to several area students, announced Melissa Sisco, director of Financial Aid.

    Chancellor’s Scholarship

    Southside graduate Phillip Reeves has been awarded a Chancellor’s Scholarship. He is the son of Shawnette and Larry Reeves. He plans to seek an associate of science degree in genetics or microbiology and transfer to Lyon College to complete his degree.

  • Felon charged with having guns

    Following his arrest for drug possession after a home visit by his parole officers, a Batesville man is now being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an affidavit filed in the Independence County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
    According to the document, filed by Detective Rob Leonard of the Independence County Sheriff’s Office, probation and parole officers Jeremy Canard and Sherill Middleton conducted a home visit on 44-year-old Shelby Crabtree at his residence on Rooster Road May 22.

  • Orice Ward

    Orice Gene Ward, 68, of Batesville died Friday, May 29, 2009, at his home.
    Born Sept. 6, 1940, in Dowdy, he was the son of Orice Roland Ward and Thelma Little Ward. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a past employee of International Shoe Company and retired from ConAgra Foods.
    Survivors include an uncle, John B. Little of Bridgeton, Mo.; two aunts, Annie Geurin of Lynn and Algi Raye Bond of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nephews and nieces.
    He was preceded in death by his parents.

  • Clynora Sweeten

    LITTLE ROCK — Clynora Story Sweeten, 87, of Little Rock died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Little Rock.
    Born April 18, 1922, in Cave City, she was the daughter of King William Story and Lee Ford Story. She worked as credit manager for Shainberg’s Department Store and later in sales for Sam’s Club. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock. She enjoyed playing canasta on Friday nights.

  • Bud Shrable

    GEPP — Lewis N. “Bud” Shrable, 83, of Gepp died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in a Salem hospital.
    The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Viola Assembly of God Church in Viola with Steve Spurlin and Allen Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Shrable Cemetery at Vidette under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Salem.
    Pallbearers will be Michael Foster, Mark Estes, Greg Burns, Steven Burns, Dustin Shrable, Jonathan Shrable, Tim Byers, Seth Byers, Jamie Collins, Brandon Langle and Brett Shrable.

    VIOLET HILL — Veneita Morgan Gaston, 84, of Violet Hill died Friday, May 29, 2009, in Batesville.
    Born Nov. 22, 1924, in Wideman, she was the daughter of Ed and Mattie Webb Morgan. She was united in marriage to Doyne Gaston. She worked with her husband on their farm and was employed at Baxter Laboratory for many years. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Forrest Chapel Methodist Church.

    LULING, La. — James E. Dry, 68, of Luling, La., died Thursday, May 28, 2009.
    He was a native of Newark and had been a resident of Luling for 41 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from M.S. Benbow and Associates and Plumber and Steamfitters Local 60.
    Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Sharon V. Dry; a son, Tracy J. LeMoine; and a daughter, Sherie Dry Gerdes; three grandchildren, Krista Crowe, Jonathan Crowe and Lexus LeMoine; a brother, Joe Dry; two sisters, Ruby D. Breckner and Ruth D. Murrell; and several nephews and nieces.

  • Lee’s Chapel homecoming set

    SANDTOWN — The annual First Sunday in June Singing and Homecoming at Lee’s Chapel Church and cemetery near Sandtown will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, organizer Keary Landers said.
    It will begin with congregational singing, followed by bluegrass gospel music. A potluck lunch will be served at noon.
    After lunch, musician Billy Snow and others will perform gospel tunes.
    The event will continue until 2 or 3 p.m., Landers said.

    STRAWBERRY — Stanley and Barbie Mayland of Strawberry have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Jillian Paige Mayland, to Mark Alan Stacy, son of Leon and Terry White of Jonesboro and the late Ricky Stacy.
    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of H.C. and Alene Mayland of Lynn and Butch and Lanoe Dickison of Saffell.
    She is an honor graduate of Hillcrest High School in Strawberry and is a full-time student at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville.
