• Eagles land, win in Batesville

    The Batesville Pioneers are hoping for a another better day-after performance.
    Monday at Lyon College’s Scots Field, the Mayflower Eagles defeated the Batesville Pioneers 9-4 in eight innings. The score was tied 4-4 after the regulation seven innings.
    The last time the Pioneers lost a nonconference game — 5-4 to Heber Springs on March 16 — they bounced back the next day and swept a 5A-East District doubleheader in Forrest City. The Forrest City Mustangs were preseason favorites to win the district.

  • BJHS track, field teams to begin season today

    The Batesville Junior High track and field teams are scheduled to open the season at Heber Springs today, and Coach Craig Stave thinks the Junior Lady Pioneers could make a run at defending a district title.
    “This could turn out to be a talented bunch,” he said. “If we can just get some middle-distance runners to come along we’ll be in good shape.”

  • Speedy’s Dragway results announced

    NEWPORT — Joey Fike, Ron Davis, Tye Combs and Scott Davis were winners at Speedy’s Newport Dragway Sunday, according to information provided to the Guard.
    Fike was quickest in the street division. Mac Brokaw and Brandon Wall finished second and third, respectively.
    Ron Davis was fastest down the line in the foot brake division, followed by Andrew Powell and Bill Smith.
    The super pro division was won by Combs. Harold Finch and Larry Cliff followed.
    Scott Davis took the top spot in the outlaw street bike class. Josh Trimm was second and Jon Dunn took third.

  • Batesville Bassmasters to discuss tournaments

    The Batesville Bassmasters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the First Community Bank’s George Rider Room to discuss this weekend’s tournament on Lake Dardanelle, secretary Colin Patterson said.
    The schedule shows the tournament set from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
    “We also have to change a tournament originally set for May 23 on Dardanelle,” Patterson said. “That’s the Memorial Day Weekend holiday, so we’ll change that.”
    Plans will also be finalized for the 2-day tournament (May 2-3) on Bulls Shoals Lake, Patterson said.

  • Conway St. Joseph blanks Southside in 4A-3 Conference soccer matches

    SOUTHSIDE — Conway St. Joseph shut out Southside in a pair of 4A-3 Conference soccer matches on Stewart Field Monday afternoon.
    The Bulldogs won 4-0. They led 1-0 at halftime.
    Cody White made 16 saves for the Southerners.
    “We took 22 shots on goal,” Southside Coach Jason Weaver said. “We just couldn’t find the nets.”
    The Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 6-0 victory. They led by the same count at halftime.

  • Piper pitcher, shortstop with TranSouth honors

    PULASKI, Tenn. — Lyon College shortstop Kristi Keller was named the TranSouth Athletic Conference Player of the Week and teammate Faith Richmond was named the TranSouth Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 29, according to a news release.
    Keller, a sophomore from Huffman, Texas, helped lead the Pipers to a 4-1 week. They defeated NCAA Division I University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and conference opponents Trevecca Nazarene and Cumberland.

    The defending Pioneer Classic and Class 3A state champion got an early exit as the Bald Knob Bulldogs took a 2-1, extra-inning decision in the first round of the Pioneer Classic Monday afternoon at the Batesville Recreation Complex’s American Legion Field.
    Bald Knob’s game-winning run against Harding Academy came in the top of the eighth inning came when Trey Gavin, who singled and then stole second base, scored on a single by Hunter Mason.

  • Lady Mustangs wrangle conference sweep

    PLEASANT PLAINS — The Midland Lady Mustangs picked up a conference doubleheader sweep over the Cedar Ridge Lady Timberwolves here Monday afternoon.
    Midland took the first game 7-6 and then game two 8-3.
    In the opener, Cedar Ridge led 3-0 early, but Midland answered with five runs in the bottom of the third and maintained the lead.
    Cedar Ridge chipped away with single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth, but a 2-run fifth helped Midland keep the advantage.
