Federal grant links rural areas

August 20, 2010 LITTLE ROCK — Thanks to what is being called the largest federal grant ever received by an institution in Arkansas, numerous communities, hospitals and colleges will get connected with broadband access in the next few years. The grant of $102 million was awarded to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. It will pay for high speed, interactive links between the teaching hospital in Little Rock and all 75 counties in Arkansas, as well as links among local agencies.

What’s wrong with a few chickens running around?

August 19, 2010 Dear editor:Personal Opinion:Honestly, I agree with Ms. Mary Farmer; what do a few chickens hurt running around Hardee’s. I think it’s kind of unique to see a mom and her baby chicks running around the parking lot. You know Memphis Peabody is/was famous for their ducks. This town needs to quit being so stuffy about the small stuff, like if windows in a store downtown meet the standards of the Historical Society; give the woman a bit of credit for knowing what looked right. I am proud of the looks of our town.

Who is Barack Obama?

August 19, 2010 President Obama couldn’t bring himself to observe the National Day of Prayer or spend time with the Boy Scouts of America, but God forbid, he couldn’t miss the Muslim Iftar Ramadan dinner, or pass up a chance to praise an Islamic center a stone’s throw away from Ground Zero.He later backed down — a bit.

Easier times

August 19, 2010 There have been easier times to be a Democrat. Think way, way back to the halcyon days of two years ago. Summer of ’08. Basking like a lazy cat napping in a sun-drenched window box. Now, not so much. Nancy Pelosi must be thinking someone on her team swallowed a bad-news electromagnet the size of a Buick.

No mosque

August 18, 2010 Building a mosque near ground zero would be like building a museum dedicated to the history of the trench coat in Columbine, Colo. There’s nothing technically wrong with it, but everyone with common sense not blinded by political correctness understands that the fact that it feels wrong should be enough to simply not do it.

Handing over control

August 18, 2010 If you read the Guard Tuesday, you noticed the front-page coverage of last weekend’s “Rock This House” women’s conference at the Ash Flat Church of Christ. I don’t know when I’ve been moved by such an event, feeling so uplifted before. It felt like the Holy Spirit was pouring into every person at the event, and there were hundreds there.

Coming in 2050

August 17, 2010 After a big meal, I fell into a restless sleep and dreamt it was 2050 ...“Follow me,” said a jittery old man as we hurried through a dark alley to a warehouse door. The man knocked on the door five times. It opened and we entered.“Where are we?” I said.“The last refuge of freedom,” said the man as he lit a cigarette and took a deep drag.“I don’t understand.”

Animal problems continue

August 17, 2010 In just the past two weeks, volunteers from the Humane Society of Independence County (HSIC) have gone on quite a few abuse/abandonment calls (as they do almost weekly), trying to determine what county animals are in dire need of attention and/or assistance.

Upset with animal control

August 16, 2010 Dear editor:Well, once again Mr. Pender and some more of our officials have gotten bored and found something else they can cause trouble about. Now we cannot have any chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, owls, etc. In all honesty I don’t know anyone who has an owl, but in case he finds one I wish Mr. Pender good luck in catching it and putting it on a bus out of town.It also makes me wonder if all these animal haters are going to have a cookout and eat all the ducks and geese at the pond at the cemetery.
