    The Thursday Morning Ladies League is scheduled to begin the season Aug. 27 at Hollywood Bowl, announced Beverly Sellers.
    Play is set to begin at 9:30 and go until noon.

  • Speedy’s drag race results announced

    NEWPORT —  Edward Littlejohn and Nikki Rutherford were winners Sunday at Speedy’s Newport Dragway.
    Littlejohn won the street division and Rutherford took the top spot in the foot brake division. Rutherford was also second to Littlejohn with Gary Spicer third.
    Joe Williams and Jerry Huber finished second and third, respectively, in the foot brake division.
    A week prior on the same strip, Spicer edged Littlejohn in the street division while David Bell beat Don Stitcher down the line in the foot brake division.

  • Southerners clobber Panthers; S-side tourney set for Friday

    DRASCO — The Southside Southerners defeated the Greenbrier Panthers by 36 strokes at Tannenbaum Golf Club here Tuesday.
    Clayton House led the winners with a 7-over-par 79. Adding to the Southerners’ 339 were: Matt Anderson, 83; Adam Martin, 86; and Chris Vaughn, 91.
    Not counting in the team total were: Dalton Littleton, 96; Chris Martin, 105; Trey Sisk, 112; Tyler Devers, 117; and Robert Hendricks, 118.
    Greenbrier’s team score was accumulated from: Jon Mark Rowden, 85; Austin Anderson, 95; Ryan Short, 97; and Tyler Buckman, 98.

  • Pioneers place 2nd in district threesome

    PARAGOULD — Garth Branstetter shot a medal-winning even-par 70 here Tuesday at the Paragould Country Club, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Batesville Pioneers from finishing any better than second in a high school triangular golf match with 5A-East District members Paragould and Greene County Tech.
    Playing on their home course and the site of the district tournament, the Paragould Rams won with a team total of 308. The Pioneers finished 16 strokes back. The Eagles placed another 19 strokes back.

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals knew they needed to sign No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg, and they did.
    They needed the San Diego State star because of his pitching talent, his 100 mph fastballs and knee-buckling breaking balls. They needed him to ramp up the remaking of a last-place team on pace for a second consecutive 100-loss season. And they needed him to create a good vibe around a team that’s suffered sagging attendance at a new stadium and all manner of bad publicity.

    STUTTGART — John and Cecilia Vinson won the Stuttgart Country Club Couples Tournament here over the weekend.
    The husband-and-wife team from Batesville trimmed Jeff and Shelly Benton of Cabot by one stroke. The Vinsons followed up Saturday’s 65 with a 67 on Sunday. The Bentons shot 67-66.

    Batesville and Southside won golf matches at The Course at Eagle Mountain on Monday.
    The Pioneers won, defeating the Southerners and the Clinton Yellowjackets in a triangular. The Lady Southerners won a dual match with the Lady Pioneers.
    Garth Branstetter led the Pioneers with a medalist-winning 4-over-par 76. Shayne Vanbenshoten (87) and Laman Fountain (92) finished the team scoring, totaling 255.
    The Southerners’ 265 was made up of Clayton House’s 85, Adam Martin’s 88 and Matt Anderson’s 92.

    DRASCO — Izard County won team titles here Monday as their high school players posted five of the top six scores at Tannenbaum Golf Course.
    Lady Cougar Kiley Mettler shot a 9-hole score of 6-over-par 42 for medalist honors. Teammates Rachel Harmon (44) and Kristen Doty (53) followed, accounting for their 139 team total.
    The Salem Lady Greyhounds finished 36 strokes back. Abby Blevins led Salem with a 55.

  • 17th Topless 100 turns into ‘Nightmare’ event

    LOCUST GROVE — It was a nightmare in victory lane Saturday night at the Batesville Motor Speedway.
    Jimmy “The Newport Nightmare” Owens (Newport, Tenn.) held off teammate and 3-time Comp Cams Topless 100 champion Scott Bloomquist to win his second crown jewel race of the season.
    Ironically, the first was at The Dream at Eldora Speedway in Ohio two months ago. Owens got $100,000 for that win. He’ll cash a $40,000 check for the Topless 100 victory.

    CONWAY — Randi Condley scored two goals as the University of Central Arkansas Bears shut out the Lyon College Pipers 3-0 here Saturday in a soccer exhibition match.
    Brittney Waren added a goal and an assist for UCA.
    The Pipers, under new Coach Tyson John, are scheduled to face Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia in another preseason event Wednesday before opening the regular season at home on Aug. 28 against Central Baptist College.

    CHEROKEE VILLAGE — The Hillcrest Screamin’ Eagles edged the Cave City Cavemen in a golf match here Thursday.
    Derek Wooten shot a 51 for nine holes as the Eagles won by two strokes (166-168). Younger brother Dylan Wooten added a 56. Billy Brannon and Trevor Morgan added 59s. One was scratched to make the team score.
    Cave City’s Alex Cossey won medalist honors with a 45. He was followed by teammates Tyler Boot (58) and Kendall Cherry (65).

  • Eagles gamble on disgraced Michael Vick

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick is back in the NFL. When he finally gets in a game, it might be at a new position.
    Looking to add a new dimension to their offense, the Philadelphia Eagles gave Vick a one-year deal with an option for a second year.
    Vick wasn’t brought in to compete with 5-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb for a starting job, but the two could end up on the field together.
