• Lady Pioneers enjoy good day in district opener

    PARAGOULD — The Batesville Lady Pioneers put together a good first day at the 5A-East District Track and Field Meet here Tuesday.
    They won four of the seven events completed in the opener for the 2-day competition and they lead the second-place Forrest City Lady Mustangs by 39 points. The Lady Pioneers totaled 91 points.
    The Lady Pioneers are aiming for their fifth straight district and Class 5A State championships.

  • Pipers selected for TranSouth awards

    After a school-record victory total, Lyon College Pipers’ softball players Kristi Keller and first baseman Taylor Morgan were named to the first-team All-TranSouth Athletic Conference squad, according to a news release from the college.
    Pitcher Tenequa Martin was Lyon’s lone representative on the TranSouth Scholar Athlete team.

  • Chattanooga hoopster signs with Lyon Scots

    A little more than a month ago, Lyon Coach Kevin Jenkins began recruiting Slater Belew and it appears both are happy now.
    Belew, a 6-foot-7 forward-center from Silverdale Baptist Academy in Chattanooga, Tenn., recently signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Lyon College Scots, according to a news release from Lyon’s sports information department.

    ROGERS — The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz won and lost in the rain-delayed Class 2A State Tournament for high school softball here Monday.
    The Lady ’Katz defeated the Decatur Lady Bulldogs 13-3 in five innings before falling to the Junction City Lady Dragons 10-5.
    In another first-rounder, the Benton Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals knocked out the Midland Lady Mustangs 1-0.

  • Scots clear first hurdle at TranSouth tournament

    JACKSON, Tenn. — The Lyon College Scots cleared the first hurdle in their quest for a TranSouth Athletic Conference Tournament championship with a 10-3 victory over the Freed-Hardeman Lions here Monday evening.
    Lyon scored its 10 runs on just five hits, but got help with nine walks, a hit batsman and two errors.
    Nick Salahub’s pitching performance didn’t hurt the efforts either. The intimidating 6-foot-9 hurler threw eight complete innings and allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out 10.

  • Badgers rally past Pioneers

    PEARCY — The Beebe Badgers hit the long drives and the Batesville Pioneers had to make the long last drive back home.
    Eight outs away from falling to the Batesville Pioneers for the 13th time in 13 high school baseball games, the Badgers dialed up two home runs to tie the score.
    One extra inning and 17 outs later, the Badgers were 9-5 winners and advanced into the Class 5A State Tournament quarterfinals.

  • Lady Pioneers, Pioneers break out in postseason soccer tournaments

    NORTH LITTLE ROCK — It was a career day for Batesville High’s soccer teams.
    The Lady Pioneers won their first-ever match in a sanctioned postseason event here Friday, defeating the North Pulaski Lady Falcons 1-0 in a first-round soccer match in the Class 5A State Tournament in Burns Park.
    A little later and in the same park, the Pioneers did the same with a 3-1 decision over the Little Rock McClellan Lions.
    The Lady Pioneers improved to 9-4-1 and the Pioneers are 8-6-1.

  • Weatherford, Carroll win Pioneer Day 5K

    MELBOURNE — Clan Weatherford and Emily Carroll won the Pioneer Day 5K here Saturday.
    Weatherford, a Mount Pleasant resident and a regular winner in road races in the area, completed the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 17.69 seconds. Joseph Spray of Highland finished three minutes behind Weatherford.
    Carroll, a junior at Melbourne High School, finished in 20:30.04. Melanie Mead of Batesville finished second among the females in a time of 23:26.24.
