Forecast: 100 percent chance for thunder in grove tonight

April 9, 2009 LOCUST GROVE — Whether it’s provided by Mother Nature or race cars, there’s a 100 percent chance for thundering noises tonight at the Batesville Motor Speedway.A 50 percent chance of rain is forecast, but as of press time everything was still a go for tonight’s Southern United Professional Racing Series (SUPR) Late Models and local modifieds.Friday night, the SUPR Late Models are scheduled to join all points classes for a full night of racing. NASCAR driver Ken Schrader is expected to race at BMS.

Pipers’ skid extended

April 8, 2009 MCKENZIE, Tenn. — The Lyon Pipers dropped their third and fourth straight TranSouth Athletic Conference games with a doubleheader loss to the Bethel Lady Wildcats here Tuesday.Bethel (20-8, 4-2) won each game 4-1.Faith Richmond suffered the game one loss while Tenequa Martin took the game two setback.Lyon (14-15, 3-4) won its first three conference games, but hasn’t done much since. After being atop the conference standings, they’re now sixth.

Lady Raiders stay unbeaten in district

April 8, 2009 JONESBORO — The Nettleton Lady Raiders added the Batesville Lady Pioneers’ scalp to their belts here Tuesday afternoon with a 10-2 and 4-0 softball sweep.The defending Class 5A State champions are 8-0 in the district and 14-3 overall. The Lady Pioneers fell to 2-4 in the district and 4-9 overall.

BHS, Nettleton split district baseball doubleheader

April 8, 2009 Early errors and deficits caught up to the Batesville Pioneers Tuesday night in the Batesville Recreation Complex.Over in Paragould, so did the Forrest City Mustangs.While the Pioneers were splitting with the Nettleton Raiders, winning 4-3 and losing 10-3, the Mustangs were romping on the Paragould Rams 8-1 and 21-11 in Paragould.

Edward Littlejohn finishes 2nd at Speedy’s Newport Dragway

April 8, 2009 NEWPORT — Steve Simpson of Newport beat Batesville’s Edward Littlejohn down the line to win the street division of Sunday’s racing at Speedy’s Newport Dragway.Chad Struther was third in the class.Cabot’s Ron Davis won the foot brake competition, keeping Lonnie Allwhite of Newark and Bill Smith of Batesville at bay.Cherry Valley resident John Taylor won the super pro class. Kevin Hoggard was second and Johnny Penn of Sulfur Rock took third.

2A-2 Ridges split extra-inning softball games

April 8, 2009 WALNUT RIDGE — The Cedar Ridge Lady Timberwolves and Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats played a pair of extra-inning games and each team collected a win here Tuesday afternoon.Walnut Ridge won the first game 2-1 in eight innings of a scheduled seven. Cedar Ridge took game two 4-3 in nine innings.Cedar Ridge Coach Danny Davis said Kayla Myers “pitched an excellent game.”The Lady Bobcats were down to their last strike in game one when the batter got a hit to tie the game at 1-1.

Cave City coach not happy with football-like score

April 8, 2009 CAVE CITY — Cave City Coach Jamie King said he told the scoreboard operator to clear the scores quickly after the Cavemen dropped a conference contest to the Flippin Bobcats here Tuesday.Not entirely because he was upset with the loss, but rather because he said he believed that the final score belonged on a football scoreboard, not baseball. Flippin won the wild contest 19-14. Cave City (14-12) responded in game two with an 11-5 decision.

Muleriders ride out of town with win streak intact

April 8, 2009 The Southern Arkansas Muleriders rode out of Batesville with a 9-4 nonconference baseball win over the Lyon College Scots on Tuesday afternoon.Southern Arkansas, ranked fourth in the most recent NCAA Division II pole, got a steady dose of offense early and stellar pitching to go along with it.James Schroeder threw the first five innings for SAU and allowed one earned run on three hits. He walked three and struck out four as he improved to 6-2.SAU, which is coached by Allen Gum, a former Batesville High coach, is 33-7 and was ranked No. 1 earlier in the season.

Southerners, Warriors split in soccer

April 8, 2009 SOUTHSIDE — Southside and Westside Consolidated split 4A-3 Conference soccer matches at Stewart Field on Tuesday.The Southerners won 2-1 in overtime when Tyler Sarracino scored the winning goal on a long pass from Tyler Strader.“The pass got by the goalie and Sarracino just punched it in,” Southside Coach Jason Weaver said.Sarracino’s goal with about two minutes remaining in regulation was unassisted.Thirty-three seconds later, the Warriors tied it.“Westside scored on a great play off a corner kick,” Weaver said.
