Torpedoes finish second in Jonesboro

June 17, 2010 JONESBORO — The Independence County Torpedoes finished second behind Jonesboro’s AAU team at a swim meet here Saturday.The host team collected 1,580 points (958 girls, 622 boys) while the Torpedoes earned 644 (223 girls, 421 boys) and Wynne tallied 380 (160 girls, 220 boys).Independence County’s individual winners were Thomas Sonnier, Louis Sonnier, William Sonnier and Jake Deskin.Thomas Sonnier won the 8-and-under 25-meter butterfly event in a time 27.49 seconds.

IOC Late Models ready for round 3

June 17, 2010 LOCUST GROVE — The Isle of Capri Late Models Series is set to return to the Batesville Motor Speedway this weekend for round three of the 5-round series.With two rounds complete, Eric Cooley of Fulton, Miss. is the points leader. Greenbrier’s Bill Frye is just two points off the pace and Batesville’s Billy Moyer Jr. is eight back.Moyer swept round one, but had a last-place finish the first night of round two. He redeemed himself with a second-place outing on night two of round two.

Rachel Harmon scores first ace in Jacksonville

June 17, 2010 JACKSONVILLE — Izard County graduate Rachel Harmon recorded her first ever hole-in-one on the par-3 14th hole at Foxwood Country Club in Jacksonville on Monday as she participated in the qualifying round of ASGA Junior Girls Match Play Tournament, according to a news release from her father and Izard County Coach David Harmon.The 14th hole was playing 137 yards over water as Harmon used a 7-iron for the ace. Witnesses were Grace Grubb, Emily Plyler, Coach Harmon, UALR Women’s Golf Coach Bridgette Norwood, and Carrie Hall.

’Katz make big news with hiring of coaches for football, basketball

June 17, 2010 MELBOURNE — The Bearkatz have their new head coaches for football and boys basketball, and one is certainly a big-news name.In a meeting Wednesday night, the school board approved the hiring of Clinton Gore and Jeremiah Quattlebaum.Gore, 70, comes to Melbourne after putting together one of the most successful high school football programs in the state. During Gore’s 21 seasons at Osceola, the Seminoles won two state championships and played for two more.

Southside camp winners announced

June 16, 2010 SOUTHSIDE — Southside Coach Brad McGhee announced the winners of last week’s basketball camp awards.The camp was for boys grades 4-7 and was held June 7-10.In the upper division, Will Wyatt, Riley Moss and Nate Hammock combined to win the 3-on-3 championship. Moss was also the hot shot champion. Braden Mead won the free-throw competition.Ethan Newcomb, Matthew Holifield and Jonathan Rowland collected the lower division 3-on-3 title. Koby Rich took the hot shot crown and Alex Brogdon was the lower division free-throw champ.

Lyon basketball camp award winners announced

June 16, 2010 The winners of Lyon College’s girls junior and senior high basketball camp have been announced by Lyon Coach Tracy Stewart-Lange.Hope Isaacs of Highland and Kallie Ross of Mountain View won the junior high and senior high most valuable player awards, respectively.The Piper Awards went to Mara Caudell of California, Mo., (junior) and Catie Ross of Mountain View (senior).The top defenders were Baylea Altom of Bald Knob (junior) and Michelle Dobbins of Mountain View (senior).Listed below are the other award winners with the junior high winner listed first:

Former Lyon basketball player killed in wreck

June 16, 2010 Former Lyon College basketball player Brandon Thomas was killed in a motorcycle wreck June 9 in Miami, Fla.“He was a big guy, but was gentle. He was well-liked by his teammates and stayed in touch,” Lyon basketball Coach Kevin Jenkins said.Thomas was in Batesville last July for the wedding of former teammate Craig Amos and Nikki Baker.The 2007 graduate was thrown from his motorcycle and Miami-Dade County police said he died at the scene, according to a report from the Miami Herald.

Former coach at BHS, SAU hired to direct UCA baseball

June 16, 2010 CONWAY (AP) — Allen Gum, a former head baseball coach at Batesville High School, has been hired by the University of Central Arkansas as its new baseball coach.Gum went 226-68 in five seasons as head coach at Division II Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders went 47-10 this year and had a player picked with the 16th overall selection in the draft. Hayden Simpson led four SAU players in the draft.

Lyon athletic department unveils, eliminates Piper mascot

Doctors sweep Searcy

June 16, 2010 The Batesville Medical Park Orthopaedic Clinic Doctors swept Searcy Land O’Frost in a Junior American Legion baseball doubleheader at the Batesville North Complex on Tuesday night.The 11-1 and 8-3 victories improved the Doctors’ records to 3-1 in Zone 2 and 8-2 overall.The opener, which counted in the zone standings, ended after four and a half innings on the 10-run rule. Levi Henderson provided the decisive blow — a 2-out, 2-run triple that capped an 8-run surge and provided the run-rule margin.
