Local baseball All-Stars finish third, fifth in state

July 16, 2010 Batesville 12-year-old and 9-year-old All-Star baseball teams finished third and fifth, respectively, in Cal Ripken North Arkansas State Tournaments recently.The 12-year-old event was held last weekend in Bentonville. After falling 10-7 to Ozarks in the opener, the local team defeated Bentonville 10-0 and Van Buren 8-0 before being eliminated by Rogers 8-7.

Mallett’s summer going swimmingly

July 16, 2010 FAYETTEVILLE — Ryan Mallett’s summer has gone swimmingly.Though the University of Arkansas drained the men’s swimming pool in the 1990s, the Razorbacks’ quarterback might be ready to restart the swimming program himself.Because of his foot is still mending from an injury suffered last winter, Mallett has been swimming instead of running readying for the August preseason drills.“I feel I  could try out for the Olympics,” Mallett said on a national teleconference. “I have a whole new respect for swimmers. It’s a strenuous workout.”

Club to hear plans for 4-Mile Classic

July 15, 2010 A committee will report on its plans for the White River 4-Mile Classic during the White River RoadRunners’ monthly meeting Tuesday night at the Citizens Bank Annex, according to a news release from the club.A review of minutes from June’s meeting, a financial statement, a report on the club’s “Train for Four” program and a review of races will be heard.The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7, but club members and visitors are invited to arrive an hour earlier for a run.

Factory Stock Shootout set for Friday at BMS

July 15, 2010 The 2nd annual Factory Stock Shootout, sponsored by The Chrome Shop, is scheduled for Friday night at the Batesville Motor Speedway.Andy Carpenter dominated the inaugural event, but numerous contenders have stepped up to challenge the 2009 points champion.With Melvin Brooks, Adam Maple, Jason Goodman, Heath Grizzle, David Hagler and more expected, Carpenter will have a bull’s eye on his back bumper. Carpenter is the current points leader with a 22-point edge over Grizzle.The factory stocks will run 30 laps for $750 and the largest factory stock trophy of the year.

Cedar Ridge hires basketball coaches

July 15, 2010 NEWARK — Cedar Ridge recently hired Isaac Middlebrooks and Casey Scribner as coaches, and Athletic Director Danny Davis said he received encouraging reports before and after the action.“I know that in a recent meeting I had some administrators tell me we did really well getting these two young men,” Davis said. “One told me we hit a home run. I just know that we’re really happy to have them aboard.”

Arkansas, Oklahoma schools to apply for new D-II league

July 14, 2010 LITTLE ROCK — The realignment bug has hit Division II.Nine Division II schools in Arkansas and Oklahoma announced plans Tuesday to apply to the NCAA for permission to create a new conference.The University of Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central University, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State must submit a strategic plan, conference constitution and conference bylaws to the NCAA by Dec. 1.

Scrappers win fourth straight state championship in baseball

July 14, 2010 MOUNTAIN HOME — The Scrappers made it four in a row here Monday.Batesville’s 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars defeated Fort Smith 14-3 in a run-ruled four innings to win their fourth straight North Arkansas State Tournament championship.With the victory, the Scrappers qualified for the Southwest Region Tournament in Gulfport, Miss., beginning July 22.

Swimming lessons to begin Monday

July 14, 2010 More swimming lessons are scheduled to begin Monday, announced instructor Jane McMullin.Morning sessions will be offered Monday through Thursday at 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. at the Fitzhugh Park pool, commonly called the Mickey Mouse pool. These classes are for all ages and for beginning to advanced swimmers.Also, a parent/child class, for children 1 and older and an adult, will be available at the Mickey Mouse and North Complex pools. At the North Complex, the class is available only at 6 p.m.The cost is $65 per student.

Jeff Taylor wins modified event in North Dakota

July 13, 2010 MANDAN, N.D. — Jeff Taylor of Cave City won on a record-setting night for the Big Dog Chassis Dakota Classic Modified Tour here Sunday, according to a news release from the International Motor Contest Association.Taylor topped the $1,200-to-win feature for IMCA Modifieds at Dacotah Speedway. A series record 81 cars, representing 10 states and two Canadian provinces, were on hand for the first of six tour events this week.
