Pioneers building up Pioneer-like numbers

April 28, 2009 The Batesville Pioneers ended the high school baseball regular season with numbers that were more Pioneer-like.First, they swept the Greene County Tech Eagles, their longtime 5A-East District rivals, in a couple of hard-fought, 5-4 decisions at the Batesville Recreation Complex on Monday.Second, the Pioneers got back in the 20-count in the win column while improving their position in the district standings. They improved to 20-10 overall, 11-3 in the district and second behind the Forrest City Mustangs.

Lady ’Katz win second straight region tourney title

April 28, 2009 MELBOURNE — The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz were crowned the Class 1A North Region Tournament champions after defeating the Salem Lady Greyhounds 5-0.Melbourne scored two runs in the first inning, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth.Abby Miller hit a 2-run single in the sixth to set the final. Tori Rush was three for three with a double. Michelle Arnold and Kenzie Gillihan added two hits each.Maggie Jo Cooper scattered four hits, walked none and struck out three en route to the victory.

Carpenter hammers another feature win

April 27, 2009 LOCUST GROVE — Jeremy Tharp started his late model career in grand fashion Friday night at the Batesville Motor Speedway.Tharp won the NeSmith Late Models feature event and it was the first night he’d raced in that class. Tharp beat Jason Wilkey, Travis Ashley, Gregg Pectol and Jason Goodman to the finish line. Only five cars participated in the late model division, which is making its return to BMS after a 10-year absence.

Lyon softball endures 0 for 4 weekend

April 27, 2009 The Lyon College Pipers were outscored 17-4 in a doubleheader loss to the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions Friday in TranSouth Athletic Conference softball action at House Field.In game one, the Pipers (20-22, 5-9) suffered an 11-0 loss in six innings. In game two, Lyon rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to close the gap to just two runs, but fell 6-4 to the Lady Lions (24-8, 11-3).Lyon’s Tenequa Martin and Kristi Keller each recorded two hits in game one and starting pitcher Faith Richmond (8-11) suffered the loss.

Neal leads Scots in series win against Trojans

April 27, 2009 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lyon senior Sam Neal did just about everything in the Scots’ doubleheader sweep of the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans and starting pitcher Nick Salahub tossed in a complete-game, 2-hitter in the rubber game.Lyon won game one 12-9 and took the finale 10-1 at Jackson Field, allowing the Scots to take the season series just a day after a 9-5 loss to the Trojans.

Hillcrest qualifies for state baseball tourney

April 27, 2009 VIOLA — Michael Spain and Dylan Wooten combined for a 4-hitter and Jordan Hunter hit two ground-rule doubles as the Hillcrest Screamin’ Eagles won their 20th game and assured themselves of at least three more with a 15-1 victory over the Rural Special Rebels in the 1A Region 2 Tournament here Saturday.The 20-3 Screamin’ Eagles are scheduled to take on the Norfork Panthers this afternoon at 6:30 in one semifinal. The other semifinal is slated to follow and will pit Viola against Mammoth Spring.

Lady Southerner vaults into state meet

April 27, 2009 HEBER SPRINGS — Carolyn Fowler turned in a state-qualifying performance here Friday to lead Southside’s results in the Heber Springs State Bank Relays.Fowler placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of eight feet, six inches. Teammate Erica Thomas placed seventh in the same event.No Southerners provided a state-qualifying performance, but the 400-meter relay team did finish third. That team was made up of Christian Manna, Donnie Cooper, Jared Dahl and Josh Harris. Cooper also placed sixth in the triple jump.
