Trinity and LeAnn Smith, Dalton and Ian of Wooster, formerly of Batesville, have announced the birth of twin children and siblings at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center in Little Rock on Jan 13, 2012. The babies have been named Megan Kelly Smith and Colin-Lee Smith.
Grandparents of the children are Calvin Smith, Lura Wade and Finis and Janet Kelly, all of Batesville.
Great-grandparents are Howard Smith and the late Darlene Smith of Batesville. -
Damien Leo Dunkel
PJ and Tiffany Dunkel of Cherokee Village have announced the birth of a son at White River Medical Center on Jan. 15, 2012. The baby weighed 5 pounds, .2 ounces and has been named Damien Leo Dunkel.
Grandparents of the child are Patty Dunkel, Daniel Dunkel Sr. and Terry Joe Baxter.
Great-grandparents are Glen Dunkel Jr., Ilean Dunkel and Gaston LaFaypette Baxter. -
Sarah Nicole Story
Jonathan and Kimberly Story and Madelyn of Cabot have announced the birth of a daughter and sister at Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock on Dec. 27, 2011. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and has been named Sarah Nicole Story.
Grandparents of the child are Vernon and Virginia Story of Cushman, Barbara Gilbert of Mountain View and the late Jimmy Dale “Poncho” Sneed.
Great-grandparents are Ray Story of Cushman and the late Letha Story, the late Hoyt and Rhoda Davis, the late Lawrence and Thelma Vickery and the late Ira and Opal Sneed. -
Diabetes support group to meet
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center-North Central will host a diabetes support group will meet at noon today at the Batesville Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting is free and open to those dealing with the disease. For more information call registered nurse Rhonda Woods at (870) 698-9992. -
Cemetery association meeting set
NEWARK — A meeting of the Blue Springs Cemetery Association will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Newark Elementary School cafeteria to discuss maintenance for the coming year.
The meeting is open to the public. -
Applications being accepted for Sharp 4-H scholarships
ASH FLAT — The Sharp County 4-H Foundation has announced that applications for the Talena Armstead Memorial/Sharp County 4-H Scholarship are now available, said County Extension Agent Joe Moore.
“This scholarship fund was established in 2002 in memory of Talena Armstead who was a member of the Ruff Riders 4-H Club and very active in all aspects of 4-H,” Moore said. “Both current Sharp County 4-H members who are high school seniors and Sharp County 4-H alumni currently attending college are encouraged to apply, as multiple scholarships will be awarded.” -
Audubon society to host ‘A Birder’s Guide to Arkansas’
CLINTON — The Little Red River Audubon Society will host Mel White, author of “A Birder’s Guide to Arkansas,” 15 other books and more than 50 National Geographic articles, in a program titled “An Expedition to the Foja Mountains of New Guinea” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Western Sizzlin’ in Clinton.
The program will be about White’s biological expedition to a remote rain forest in a mountain range where there is no evidence that humans have ever lived, a world of bizarre and beautiful creatures, many previously unknown, according to a news release. -

Silicon Valley-Hollywood rivalry exposed
LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a move that heightens the growing tension between Silicon Valley and Hollywood, Wikipedia and other websites went dark Wednesday in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.
The web-based encyclopedia is part of a loose coalition of dot-coms and large technology companies that fear Congress is prepared to side with Hollywood and enact extreme measures — possibly including the blocking of entire websites— to stop the online sharing and unauthorized use of Hollywood productions. -
Wikipedia, Google protest SOPA/PIPA
NEW YORK (AP) — January 18 is a date that will live in ignorance, as Wikipedia started a 24-hour blackout of its English-language articles, joining other sites in a protest of pending U.S. legislation aimed at shutting down sites that share pirated movies and other content.
Reddit.com shut down its social news service for 12 hours. Other sites made their views clear without cutting off surfers. Google blacked out the logo on its home page, directing surfers to a page where they could add their names to a petition against the bills. -

The Guard’s correspondent at Cave City has reported that since the new road has been completed from Batesville to his town a day never passes but that automobile parties visit that place. It is a splendid road and offers inducements to the automobile owner who would enjoy a 30-mile joy ride. -
When was Batesville established?
A Batesville resident is asking why no one seems seem enthused about holding a 200th anniversary celebration for the city this year.
The short answer is: No one really knows when the first “town” was established here. For one thing, it depends upon how “town” is defined and what criteria is used in the definition.
