• Lyon to host Honors Day

    Students will have the chance to earn scholarships during the spring semester as Lyon College hosts the first January Honors Day competition Jan. 28 on campus.
    Open to students accepted at Lyon College and having either a 3.25 GPA or better or an ACT composite score of 23 or better, Honors Day is a four-part competition that gives prospective students a chance to earn scholarship money including full tuition, room, board, fees and books. Participants are guaranteed an academic scholarship of no less than $6,500 per year.

    Ruddell Hill Baptist Church has opened a clothes closet ministry called “Loves Closet” (including warm clothes and coats).
    The closet will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with free clothes given to those in need.

  • Report indicates man died of natural causes

    MOUNTAIN HOME — The death of a 38-year-old rural Mountain Home man on Jan. 5 has been ruled natural, according to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery.
    He said his office has received the preliminary cause of death report from the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office regarding the unattended death of Steven John Hamm that was reported previously.  The preliminary report indicates that Hamm died of natural causes related to a heart condition, Montgomery said.

  • Crash kills teen

    MOUNT VERNON — A Heber Springs girl, Katherine Pitcock, 19, of East Pine Street, died Wednesday night from injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle accident in Faulkner County around 10 p.m. Monday.
    Arkansas State Police Trooper Thomas Glover said Pitcock was northbound on Highway 36, just north of Mount Vernon, when she crossed the center line in her 2005 Chevrolet Aveo and struck a 2012 Dodge, knocking it off the west side of the highway. Pitcock’s car, he said, went off the opposite side of the road.

  • Drunk driver calls cop a ‘no-good American’

    Arrested Saturday night for drunk driving violations, a Batesville man claims the cop who arrested him is a “no good American,” according to a police report.
    Independence County Deputy Ben Keener said he was patrolling in west Batesville around 11:30 p.m. when he noticed a white SUV twice cross the center line of North Central Avenue before driving into the on-coming traffic lane while turning onto West Chestnut Street.

  • Judge: Sharp County owes no money

    ASH FLAT — Sharp County is debt-free, County Judge Larry Brown told the quorum court during a regular meeting Tuesday.
    “The court was informed that the lease purchase agreement on three CAT (Caterpillar) graders was paid off,” Brown said Wednesday. “Sharp County is debt-free.”
    Treasurer Wanda Girtman said the amount paid was $383,966.
    The county also accepted a bid of $183,500 for a new CAT road grader with a $4,600 parts credit from Riggs Equipment in Little Rock. Brown said this road grader will be paid for upon delivery.

  • Hewitt, injury KOs Roddick

    MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Andy Roddick’s bid to win another Grand Slam singles title nearly a decade after his first hit a roadblock this morning when a hamstring injury forced him out of the Australian Open.
    The former No. 1, whose lone major singles win came at the 2003 U.S. Open, was trailing Lleyton Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 when he called the trainer to his courtside chair. He then walked over to Hewitt and shook the Australian player’s hand.
    Roddick had fallen to the court in the second set, but played despite being in obvious pain from the leg injury.

  • Unbeaten Baylor women win 18th

    LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Brittney Griner scored 21 points to lead No. 1 Baylor over Texas Tech 72-64 on Wednesday.
    Texas Tech cut the lead to 69-63 when Monique Smalls stole the ball from Odyssey Sims in the backcourt and made a layup with 1:12 remaining.
    But Griner, who hit seven of 16 shots from the field and blocked eight shots, hit a short jumper from the left side to put the Lady Bears back up by eight 71-63 and seal the win.
    Baylor worked the ball inside to the 6-foot-8 Griner, who was able to pass the ball out or work her way in for easy layups.

    LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jorge Brian Diaz made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Nebraska the lead, Indiana couldn’t score on its last possession, and the struggling Cornhuskers upset No. 11 Indiana 70-69 on Wednesday night for the Hoosiers’ third straight loss.
    Indiana (15-3, 3-4) squandered a 13-point, second-half lead as Nebraska (10-8, 2-5) posted its biggest victory as a new member of the Big Ten.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Penn State’s trustees agonized over the future of legendary football Coach Joe Paterno but ultimately decided to fire the Hall of Famer in part over what they said was his failure to go to authorities with a report of alleged sexual assault of a child by an assistant coach nearly a decade ago, according to a report published this morning in The New York Times.
