    PLEASANT PLAINS — Two top-5 Class 1A high school basketball teams switched places this weekend.
    The Midland Lady Mustangs, previously ranked fourth in the state by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, edged the Sacred Heart Lady Rebels 71-68 in a non-conference game at Midland High on Friday.
    Sunday, the Lady Mustangs and Lady Rebels replaced each other in the rankings.

  • Man sentenced to 18 months for cross burning

    LITTLE ROCK (AP) — An Independence County man who pleaded guilty in July to burning a cross in front of the home of a black man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
    Tony Branscum, who is white, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Little Rock to the maximum allowed under federal guidelines for criminal interference with the right to fair housing.

    ASH FLAT — Sharp County’s 1-cent countywide sales tax collections totaled $1,647,465 during 2011, according to figures provided by county Treasurer Wanda Girtman.

  • Children removed from Oil Trough facility

    OIL TROUGH — A number of children have been removed from The New Life Church Children’s Home at Oil Trough, but the home is still open — at least for now.
    Founder Tim Bumpous would not say why the children were removed, nor did he know how many exactly were removed, but asserted that it was not due to any kind of abuse.
    “We’re there to love these kids. We’re going to stay open. Everything is fine. We’re still licensed and opened,” Bumpous told the Guard this morning. He also said he would be happy to comment further after a Department of Human Services’ meeting on Wednesday.
