• No injuries in plane incident

    LAKEVIEW (AP) — A small airplane hit the ground when it attempted to take off from an airport in northern Arkansas.
    Authorities say no injuries were reported Tuesday to the three people on board.
    Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says the single-engine Piper PA-28-180 was leaving Gaston’s Resort when a crosswind caused it to bump the ground about 1:15 p.m. Cory says the plane sustained minor damage.
    She says the aircraft was en route to Texarkana, Ark.

    Independence County deputies were called to the Exxon Tigermart on Meyers Street early Friday morning after a Jonesboro woman refused to take no for an answer.
    Sausha Dee Jones, 35, was arrested after she returned to the gas station she was ordered not to come back to, according to a report filed with the sheriff’s department.

  • County deals with floods, roads, more

    January 2011 brought a new county judge, floods, bad roads and missing money and equipment.
    More than $17,000 was discovered missing, resulting from sales to a local scrap yard paid in cash during a two-year period. Newly-elected County Judge Robert Griffin then instructed all scrap metal buyers that all sales to the county be paid with a company check and made out to “Independence County,” and that no scrap brought by the county be paid in cash.

    The Batesville City Council wasn’t playing around when it announced it was putting a sales tax issue on the ballot for parks and recreation.
    Tuesday night, the council agreed to seek a 1-cent sales tax to fund a $25.9 million project. The citywide election will be March 13.

    ROCKPORT, Texas — Mary Allene Sanders, 92, of Rockport, Texas, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011.
    Born Dec. 27, 1918, in Cave City, she was the daughter of Lottie Stewart and Roy Landers. She had been a resident of Rockport since 1980. She had played keyboard for Alta & Friends band since 1984 and entertained at local nursing homes. She was a member of Fulton Community Church.

    Klo Teague, 98, of Batesville died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, in a Batesville nursing home.
    Born May 30, 1913, at Lead Hill, she was the daughter of Peter M. and Minervia Wilson Riggs. She was a licensed practical nurse, an avid reader and walked 15 miles a day. She was of the Baptist faith.
    Survivors include two daughters, Betty Teague Mott and Jerrye Teague Anderson, both of Batesville; four grandchildren, Randy Heathcoat and Timothy Heathcoat, both of Michigan, Lisa McQueen of Houston and Scott Sims of Milwaukee; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
