Group seeks support
SOUTHSIDE — Teens for Christ, a student-led organization at Southside High School, meets at noon on Wednesdays for student-led fellowship and devotional.
Every third Wednesday, Emmanuel Baptist Church supplies pizza, dessert and drinks for students and the group is wanting to spread the word to other churches that might want to support the organization during the rest of the month, facilitator Janet Davis said.
“They bring the food, but don’t participate in the fellowship and devotional,” she said. -
Hillcrest slates ‘roadblock’
STRAWBERRY — Future Business Leaders of America at Hillcrest High School will hold a “roadblock” fundraiser at the intersection in Strawberry on Tuesday.
Proceeds will go toward Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. Hillcrest FBLA placed third in raising money for the hospital at the FBLA state conference last year, and members would like to raise even more this year by collecting money from motorists, adviser Janice Clayton said. -
Extension service offers contracting workshop
ASH FLAT — The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in Sharp, Fulton and Izard counties will host a workshop about obtaining government contracts at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sharp County courtroom in Ash Flat.
Participants will learn about contracting opportunities available through the Arkansas Procurement Assistance Center and how businesses can take advantage of these opportunities. -
Ozarka Culinary Arts Gourmet Dinner set for Thursday
MELBOURNE — The Ozarka College Culinary Arts Department will host the first gourmet dinner of this semester from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Advanced culinary arts students are currently working on a menu that will be prepared and served under the direction of instructors Mimi Newsome and Eric Smith.
The dinner will be served in the culinary arts department, located in the John E. Miller Education Complex at Ozarka College’s main campus in Melbourne. Menus will be provided for entrée selection, and prices will be listed. -

Last week, if you read my column, I complained about the service I recently received from a grocery store clerk.
Weeks before, however, I experienced great service during a trip to Memphis that I felt deserving of attention, going to show that not only do I pay attention to the bad, but the good, too.

Bombers follow Lions with breakthrough win
The Mountain Home Bombers completed the 7A-6A East District’s high school football sweep in Pioneer Stadium on Friday night.
One week after the Searcy Lions won their first game against the Batesville Pioneers in eight seasons, the Bombers rallied in the second half to defeat the Pioneers 27-20, collecting their first win against the Pioneers since 2001.
That’s also the previous time the Lions and Bombers defeated the Pioneers in the same season. -
Hunter’s ed course offered
There will be a free hunter education/safety course from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the new Independence County Shooting Sports Complex. Hunters 16 and older who were born after Dec. 31, 1968 must have a hunter education certificate.
The shooting complex is located on Highway 167 north of Batesville, across from Believers Community Church.
There will be a lunch break, but lunch will not be provided. -
Main Street planning luau
Main Street Batesville is announcing plans for an end of summer luau to be held Saturday, in the downstairs River Room of Josie’s at the Lockhouse at 50 River Bend Road.
In addition to food, a silent auction and door prizes, the David Grimes All Star Band will perform from 7-10 p.m. An ugliest Hawaiian shirt contest will also be held.

Solid waste management district board to meet
The quarterly meetings of the White River Regional Solid Waste Management District Board and the White River Planning and Development District Board have been scheduled for Thursday at Newport Business Resource Center in Newport.
The Solid Waste Management District Board meeting will be at 10 a.m. with the White River Planning and Development District meeting following at 10:30.

Cedar Ridge sets annual report
NEWARK — The Cedar Ridge School District will hold its annual report to the public when the school board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Ridge High School cafeteria in Newark.
The board’s agenda includes discussion of the special education 2011-12 budget application approval, financial report and budget.
Meetings are open to the public. -
