Charles May and Nicole Alward of Sulphur Rock have announced the birth of a son at White River Medical Center on Sept. 24, 2011. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 5.3 ounces and has been named Robert Lee May.
Grandparents of the child are Robert and Emily Nast and Ralph and Jeannie Wetmore.
Great-grandparents are Charles and Emily Goodman. -
Old Lunenburg Music Festival to benefit saloon restoration
MELBOURNE — The Lunenburg Community Center Association will host the 2011 Old Lunenburg Music Fest Saturday on County Road 3, four miles south of Melbourne, to benefit the Lunenburg Saloon Project.

Library hosts book sale
Independence County Library will have a book sale beginning at 9 a.m. Monday. The sale will continue until all books are sold.
All books are 25 cents each.
Library hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Pet Adopt-a-thon to be Saturday
Petsense has committed to find 1,000 animals a home during the National Pet Adopt-a-thon this weekend.
Adoption hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the store located at 45 Eagle Mountain Boulevard in Batesville.
During the event, pets from the Humane Society of Independence County will be available for $40, which is half the price of the regular adoption fee.
All animals have been spayed or neutered and have had all shots, including rabies vaccine. -
Civitan banquet is set
The White River Valley Civitan Club Installment Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Caudel’s Family Restaurant (formerly Western Sizzlin) in Batesville.

Defensive driving class offered
A defensive driving class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, located at 2005 White Drive.
The class will be presented by Southwest Safe Driving Inc., a non-profit, state-approved organization.
Those 55 and older will receive a reduction on their automobile insurance upon class completion.
Young drivers are also welcome to take the class. -
Greenfield, Tucker to exchange vows
Tony and Denice Greenfield of Batesville have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Brittney Fay Greenfield, to John David Tucker, son of Gary and Roetta Tucker of Batesville.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Eugene and Ruby Greenfield and Bobby and Donna Willis, all of Batesville.
She is a 2006 graduate of Cushman High School and a 2010 graduate of Lyon College with a bachelor’s in psychology. She is employed at the Department of Human Services as a program eligibility specialist. -
Budget committee sets meetings
The Independence County Quorum Court will hold a budget committee meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
It will discuss the 2012 proposed budgets for law enforcement, district court, prosecuting attorney and shooting range.
The committee will also meet at 5 p.m. Thursday to review the library, senior citizens, economic development, Department of Human Services, health and juvenile detention proposed budgets.
The meetings, which are open to the public, will be held at the Independence County Circuit Courtroom, 192 E. Main St. -
Tax collector to be in CV, Cave City
ASH FLAT — Sharp County Tax Collector Charlotte Ratliff will be at the Cherokee Village Senior Center on Monday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and at the Cave City Community Center on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. collecting taxes.
“Due to the road construction going on near the courthouse (in Ash Flat), I encourage people to take advantage of these alternate locations,” Ratliff said.
She said those coming to pay their taxes should bring their tax statements if possible, as that will make the process go faster. It is not a requirement, however. -
Reward offered in theft
A $500 cash reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for theft of a heat pump/air conditioning unit at the Batesville Outing Club overnight Monday.
Larry Bentley reported that someone came onto the remote property on Locust Grove Road following a cookout and took the Bryant unit after cutting wires and copper lines.
No suspects were listed in the theft of the $4,000 unit. -
JPs approve grant funding
ASH FLAT — During its recent September meeting, the Sharp County Quorum Court authorized County Judge Larry Brown and County Clerk Tommy Estes to sign a construction contract with CEG Construction Co. of Pollard for a sewer extension project in Highland, according to public information in the clerk’s office.
The contract is for $726,214. The county is not obligated in any way; the court’s authorization is merely required in order to receive grant funding. -
Pumpkin patch now open
The Hope Lutheran School is selling pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and hay bales through Oct. 31 to raise funds for the school.
The hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. The school is located at 2415 E. Main St., Batesville and can be reached at (870) 793-3078.
