Feeling the vibe: Elvis slept here
Stepping inside that little two-bedroom apartment just off 185 Winchester Ave., in Memphis, I felt the vibe.
Sure, it might have only been the temperature change from being outside in the heat and then inside the air-conditioned building, but like much of the city, there was an electricity in the air.
Here I stood inside the room, albeit renovated and featuring A/C, where a young Elvis Presley and his parents, Vernon and Gladys, moved to in 1949 from Tupelo, Miss. -
Lady Southerners place second in Cave City volleyball tourney
CAVE CITY — The Southside Lady Southerners led area volleyball teams in the Cavewoman Classic here Saturday, finishing second to the Harding Academy Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Southerners went 2-0 during pool play, defeating Bay 25-7, 25-16 and edging Conway Christian 25-21, 25-19. Seeded third in the single elimination tournament bracket, the Lady Southerners drew a first-round bye and then thumped the host team 25-12, 25-11 and battled past Conway Christian 25-12, 19-25, 15-8 in the semifinals. The Harding Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Southerners 28-26, 25-18 to win the title. -
Lyon teams go 1-1, 0-2 in soccer tourney
MOBILE, Ala. — Ben Parman won his first match as coach of the Lyon College women’s soccer team here Saturday, and freshman goalie Stephanie Spiteri recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career during a 3-0 win over the Belhaven Blazers at Spring Hill University’s annual Classic on the Hill tournament.
“It was a great game, and the girls played really well for us,” Parman said. “It’s always good to get the monkey off your back by winning your first game.”
Senior Creeia Nuckols scored all three goals for the Scots with her first coming at 35:27. -
Scots fall to Wildcats at home
The Lyon College Scot volleyball team lost their season and TranSouth Conference opener to the Bethel Lady Wildcats at home Saturday in straight sets, but by a total of only 10 points.
Bethel won 25-22. 25-20, 27-25.
Scot Head Coach Ray Green said he was pleased with his team’s effort and said they looked sharp.
“The outcome wasn’t what we wanted, but it was a good game for the opening match of the season,” Green said. “The match could have gone either way. The girls played well, and we hope to keep to continue to improve as the season progresses.” -
Cave City sweeps in tennis opener
CAVE CITY — Cave City opened its high school tennis season with a sweep of Mountain View here Thursday. Both victories were decided by one game.
The Cavewomen’s 5-4 advantage was in singles play, where they won four of five matches. The Cavemen won it with their doubles play, again winning four of five, en route to a 5-4 decision.
Senior Jasmine Tate and junior Leigh Ann Bridgers each won a pair of singles matches for the Cavewomen. seniors Bree Cook and Leesia Fugett teamed to win the decisive doubles match. -

But there is grace even in watching our loved ones hurt, according to Jennifer Rothschild, who lost her sight as a teenager but believes when God granted her blindness, he also gave her sufficient grace to carry that blindness.
It was her family who carried a heavier burden, she told a crowd Friday night at the Rock This House women’s conference at the Ash Flat Church of Christ. -
Cougars, Lady Pirates win at Cooper’s Hawk
LA CROSSE — The Izard County Cougars and Calico Rock Pirates won the golf team titles Thursday at Cooper’s Hawk.
Preston Harmon led the Cougars with an even-par 36 for nine holes. Brad Lamb also shot a 36 for the second-place Melbourne Bearkatz. The medalist, however, was Shayne Rorie of Flippin. He shot one under.
Uriah Mead added a 41 for Izard County. Zack Logan’s 45 completed the team score.
Melbourne finished two strokes back as Dylan Smith added a 40 and Tyler Webb a 48.
Shirley’s boys finished third with 129. Cave City placed fourth with a 139. -
Southside bounces back to beat Trumann
TRUMANN — The Southside Lady Southerners battled back to win after dropping the first two sets of their match to the Trumann Lady Wildcats here Thursday.
After the match, Southside Coach David Shilkitus described his team as resilient.
“This was a big step for our team,” Shilkitus said. “We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole at the start of the match, then rallied, came together and found a way to pull out the win. We’d rather not have the issues we saw in the first two sets, but we showed we have the ability to overcome a deficit.” -
Body found is that of missing woman
SHERWOOD (AP) — Police have confirmed that a decomposing body found near a Pulaski County road is that of a missing Sherwood woman.
Officer Josh Adams said Thursday the body was positively identified as 74-year-old Katherine Cleary.
An investigator found Cleary’s body after one of two women arrested on allegations of using her credit card told police some of Cleary’s property had been dumped there. Adams said none of Cleary’s belongings were found.
He says police believe the body had been at the location for more than 24 hours and was discolored by the sun and the heat. -
Okla. man is convicted of manslaughter
FORT SMITH (AP) — A man charged with first-degree murder was convicted on a lesser manslaughter charge by a Sequoyah County jury.
Calvin Ed Tehee, 42, of Stilwell, Okla., was convicted in the slaying of Ronald Dean “Shorty Brown” Taylor.
Taylor was shot on May 1, 2010, in the Nicut community near Muldrow.
Teehee testified in his own defense and said there had been a disagreement with Taylor that had begun the day before.
The two men agreed to meet, and Teehee brought a shotgun. He claimed Taylor was known to be armed. -
Lake drained so it can be cleaned
HARRISON (AP) — Officials have drained much of Lake Harrison to cleanse it of debris and gravel that washed into the water as a result of spring floods.
Harrison Public Works director Wade Phillips said the project qualified for disaster funding, so the Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to pay up to $320,000, or 75 percent of the cost.
Phillips says the state will pay 12.5 percent and the city will pay the rest.
Eaton Excavating of Harrison was awarded the project after submitting the lowest bid — $220,000.
