Teen wins fourth place in the Special Talent Contest
Most teenagers don’t even listen to classical music — much less know how to play it.
But Crystal Qian of Batesville can not only play it, she plays it very well. She is the daughter of Jason Qian and Sunny Shang and recently won fourth place in the Special Talent Contest at the National Beta Club Convention that was held in Nashville, Tenn.
She played Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, 3rd Movement on the piano. In order to compete at the national level, a participant must place at the state level. -
Scrappers arrested for theft of metal
Police responded to two separate incidents Thursday where metal collectors had reportedly stolen items from private property.
Robert Sanders called police after he reportedly caught a man later identified as Lee Ivory, 46, of Jonesboro, stealing several tubes of round pipe from his property on North Central Avenue around 1:30 p.m.
Sanders told Deputy Anthony Carter that he had received a call saying a man was stealing scrap iron from the property and when he investigated he reportedly found Ivory taking the metal. -
Lyon students receive grants for cave research
Lyon College sophomores Katy Nalven of Tempe, Ariz., and Autumn Bryant of Pocahontas have been awarded grants from the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. The ASGC STEM awards are for $2,000 each and must be used by May 2012.
Nalven and Bryant will use the money to conduct biological inventories of nearby caves. According to Bryant’s grant proposal, she will be researching microorganisms in order to “further the investigation of species.” -
ICEDC slates meeting
The Independence County Economic Development Commission will have its regular meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce, according to executive director Ed Mabry.

Adopted shelter dog photos wanted for contest
Petfinder has partnered with Fuzzy Nation to present a “Super Model Photo Contest” for dogs adopted from shelters or rescue groups, according to a news release from the Humane Society of Independence County.
The grand prize is $10,000 to the shelter or rescue group from which the dog was adopted, plus a custom Fuzzy Nation bag to match the winning pet as well as a Kuranda dog bed, and $300 gift card to Fuzzy Nation for the pet parent. -
Wire taken from empty business
A former Social Security building, behind Town Plaza Shopping Center on Main Street, was recently the target of copper thieves, according to a report by Independence County Deputy Tommy Harper.
Harper said he met with Barry Butler, the contractor making repairs to the building, who said entry was made into the building from the air conditioning ducts on the roof.
The building owner, Blair Arnold, said approximately $8,000 in damages was done to the air conditioning unit and about $1,500 worth of copper wiring was removed.
No suspects were listed. -
Youth busted for marijuana
When confronted by a police officer in front of a Batesville business Friday night, a 16-year-old boy reportedly admitted to smoking and possessing marijuana.
Deputy Andrew Rogers said he was dispatched to 2360 Harrison St. around 7 p.m. in reference to a boy in a neon green shirt smoking marijuana. -
Correction
State Rep. James McLean’s name was misspelled in Monday’s edition of the Guard as attending the third annual Veterans Appreciation Day held at the fair on Saturday.
Also, Stephen William Lynch was a Wall of Fame inductee. -
Driving tests canceled
There will be no written or driving tests given in Batesville on July 28-29, according to Jim Howard, license examiner for the Arkansas State Police. Tests will resume on Aug. 4-5.

Derby time corrected
The registration and starting times for the White River Kiwanis Youth Fishing Derby at Row Lake on Saturday was incorrectly listed in the “Sports calendar” in Monday’s paper.
The registration is to begin at 6 a.m. Fishing is set to begin at 7 and end at 9. -
Scrappers win at NBC World Series tourney
HARRISON — The Batesville Scrappers, a 12-year-old tvAll-Star team, continued their winning ways Monday by defeating the Butler County Yankees 14-4 in the final game of the National Baseball Congress World Series tournament.
The game remained close until the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff single by Taylor Ford followed by back-to-back-to-back doubles by Zach Langston, Zach Griffin and Tanner Vinson helped contribute to a 9-run inning for the Scrappers. Vinson hit a second double to score the game’s final run. -
Batesville athlete bound for JOs in New Orleans
Batesville High sophomore-to-be Quay Tyler is packing her bags for the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in New Orleans.
Running with Team Elite of Searcy, Tyler qualified for the annual event which is set for Aug. 1-6.
Tyler, who qualified for the Class 5A State Meet this past spring, teamed with Tierica Dixon, Iesha Couser and Takara Coleman to qualify in the 1,600-meter relay, and teamed with Couser, Keylah Hodges and Dixon for the 400-meter relay.
