Johnny Cash tribute set for June 3
MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View will host its second Tribute to Johnny Cash Concert at 7 p.m. June 3. This year’s tribute show will feature two of Cash’s sidemen, as well as one of the folk center’s own performers: W.S. “Fluke” Holland on drums, Dave Roe on bass and Charlie White on guitar.

Library candidates on agenda
The Independence County Library board will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday at Citizens Bank Annex in downtown Batesville to interview applicants for the librarian’s position.

Disaster center opening in Pocahontas
POCAHONTAS (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is to open a disaster recovery center in Pocahontas to serve residents in northeast Arkansas.
Residents of Clay, Greene, Lawrence and Randolph counties can meet with state and federal recovery officials starting today at the Pocahontas Community Center
The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. -
Food stolen from restaurant
ASH FLAT — Three people who stole food from Cozumels Mexican Restaurant in Hardy on Thursday got more than they expected, according to a posting on the Sharp County sheriff’s website.
Restaurant staff reported to the county’s dispatch center that “a man and two women had just ordered $77 worth of food to go and then left with the food without paying for it,” Sheriff Mark Counts said. “A short while later Deputy Gary Mitchell and Arkansas State Trooper Fred Dail spotted the vehicle coming through the Highland area.” -
ICEDC slates meeting
The Independence County Economic Development Commission will have its regular meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce, according to executive director Ed Mabry.

BHS approved for EAST lab
LITTLE ROCK — The EAST Initiative has announced the implementation of nine new EAST programs for the 2011-12 school year and one of those schools is Batesville High.
Batesville Junior High School began its EAST program last year.
Another area school launching a new program is Bald Knob Middle School.
Environmental and Spatial Technology is an educational model that focuses on student-driven community service projects accomplished by using teamwork and cutting-edge technology, according to a news release. -
Board eyes stimulus funds
MELBOURNE — The Melbourne School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the administration building.
Agenda items include discussion of personnel employment, equipment contracts and projects funded by stimulus money.
Meetings are open to the public. -
Woman accused of stealing from newspaper containers
MELBOURNE — A 44-year-old woman who gave her address as a church in Pineville was arrested Friday for theft of property, Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said.
Dorothy Marie Friend is accused of taking money from newspaper collection containers of a Calico Rock newspaper. Friend was briefly jailed, released on an own recognizance bond and given a district court date.
In other arrests:
• Landon Newton Sherrill, 30, of Dolph was arrested early this morning for DWI and remains in jail on a $1,000 bond. -
Domestic incident leads to suspect being injured
ASH FLAT — A suspect in a domestic violence incident in Sharp County wound up in a Memphis hospital after one of his intended victims turned the tables on him, Sheriff Mark Counts posted Sunday on his website.
Counts said that around 8:11 p.m. Wednesday Sharp County 911 dispatch received a call about a man with a gun threatening to kill someone at 76 E. Wirth Road.
“The sheriff’s department along with other agencies in the area responded,” Counts said. “An ambulance was also dispatched to the area because of reports that one or more persons had been injured.” -
Man flees police because of check overdraft
When Independence County Deputy Ernie Gillihan saw a man walking under the Bayou Bridge on North Central Avenue around 9 a.m. Friday, he became curious and decided to investigate and drove toward him on a side road.
That’s when the man, later identified as 22-year-old Kysson L. Spivey of Myers Street, decided to run.
“I exited my car and began chasing the subject on foot east through the woods alongside the bayou, ordering the subject to stop several times,” Gillihan said. -

MOUNT PLEASANT — Ask Linda Hutchins what she thinks about having served 10,840,200-plus meals at breakfast and lunch during her 32 years as a Mount Pleasant lunch lady and she can’t believe it.
Ask her what she loves best about her job as manager of the elementary cafeteria and the biggest smile spreads across her face.
“The kids. I just love the kids,” she said. “I could just spoil every one of them. … They’ve made me feel young all these years.” -
High winds, flooding hit Friday
A severe thunderstorm that rolled through Independence County Friday afternoon caused heavy damage in the Charlotte area, according to Tony Younger with the Independence County Office of Emergency Management.
“Around 3:30 straight line winds heavily damaged one side of the sale barn and blew the roof off a trailer next door,” Younger said. “A metal welding shop building across the road was blown off its foundation about 8 or 10 inches.
“Several large trees in that same area were heavily damaged too, but nobody was injured.”
