S. African regulators allow Walmart deal
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African regulators approved Walmart’s $2.4 billion bid to buy a controlling share of Massmart today, imposing conditions that the companies themselves had proposed.
Unions and government officials have expressed concerns that the arrival of the world’s biggest retailer could hurt jobs and local manufacturing. But Walmart’s interest in coming to Africa for the first time can also be seen as a vote of confidence in South Africa’s economy and the continent’s potential. -
JR Nation disappointed when gas tank goes dry
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. was out front on the final lap for the first time in 105 races, and the only thing standing in the way of a victory was the gas, or lack of it, in his tank.
The crowd roared as he took the white flag, the fans stomping in the stands in near hysteria over the almost certain ending of Earnhardt’s nearly three-year losing streak.
In a blink of an eye, it was over. -
Local road runner breaks state record
LITTLE ROCK — Batesville’s Betsy Tucker set a new state record when she crossed the finish line of the Rock Run 8K at Murray Park here Saturday.
Tucker, 54, finished the 4.97-mile race with a time of 34 minutes 56.78 seconds to set the 8K Grand Master record. Her pace of 7:02 per mile was a personal best.
Tucker didn’t start road racing until three years ago and this is her first year to compete in earnest. She has run in eight races since January 1 and won two. -
Ring leads Pioneer Jrs. in awards for baseball
Batesville High junior Tanner Ring was recently named to the Class 5A All-State team for baseball, and he’s part of the reason Coach Mark Rush has high hopes for the immediate future.
“The best part of the whole deal is we have not only Tanner, but the rest of these all-conference guys coming back next season,” the coach said.
Along with Ring, classmates Cody Vaughn, Ryan Coles and Hayden Cockrill were named to the 5A-East All-District team. -

TJ and Casey Burnside of Newport have announced the birth of a daughter at White River Medical Center on May 24, 2011. The baby weighed 8 pounds and has been named Avery Elizabeth Mabry Burnside.

Dennis and Christy Blackmore and Lexi of Batesville have announced the birth of a daughter and sister at White River Medical Center on May 24, 2011. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 15.2 ounces and has been named Haleigh Jayde Blackmore.
Grandparents of the child are Ronald and Kathy Curtis, David Blackmore and Leilani Mynatt.

Matthew and Lenora Totten of Springdale have announced the birth of a daughter at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers on May 5, 2011. The baby weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces and has been named Sarah Katherine Totten.
Grandparents of the child are Elisha Coles of Batesville and the late Dortha Coles and Roger and Allison Totten of Melbourne.
Great-grandparents are Arvella Totten of Melbourne and Elizabeth Thomas of Memphis. -
NADT to host ‘Alice’
The North Arkansas Dance Theatre will host “Alice in Wonderland” at 7 p.m. Friday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Brown Chapel on the Lyon College campus.

Green reunion is Saturday
SULPHUR ROCK — The Green family reunion will be on Saturday at the Sulphur Rock City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The reunion is open to all friends and family. -
Floral reunion planned
FLORAL — The Floral School reunion will be Saturday in the Midland Elementary School cafeteria in Floral. A potluck will be served at noon.
The class of 1961 will be honored, as members are celebrating their 50-year reunion.
