Comp Cams late models still slated to run Friday
LOCUST GROVE — As of press time, Friday night’s racing at Batesville Motor Speedway was to continue as scheduled.
The Comp Cams Super Dirt Late Model Series is set to visit the speedway and will be accompanied by points racing for IMCA modified, street stock, factory stock, economy modified and front-wheel drive classes.
Originally scheduled for April 23, the show was to feature the Mid-America Racing Series (MARS). However, due to a scheduling conflict with MARS Friday night, the Comp Cams series will fly solo. -
Mary McClure
MELBOURNE — Mary Ann McClure, 78, of Melbourne died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in a Melbourne nursing home.
Born March 7, 1933, in Hartshorne, Okla., she was the daughter of James and Latisha Clark Dobson. She was a registered dietician and had worked at Pioneer Nursing Home and Yellville Hospital before retiring. She was a member of Melbourne Community Church and enjoyed gardening, shopping and going to flea markets. -
John Canady
MAGNET COVE — John Edward Canady, 75, of Magnet Cove died Monday, April 25, 2011, in Hot Springs.
Born July 17, 1935, in Jamestown, he was the son of George Edward Canady and Chattie Richardson Canady. He worked for Howard Industries in Missouri and Illinois. He retired from the rolling mill at Reynolds Metals in the Malvern plant after 18 years. He was a member of Jamestown Missionary Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking and was a fan of Razorbacks sports. -
Jo Ann Bradley
GRANGE — Jo Ann Bradley, 48, of Grange died Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at her home.
Born June 12, 1962, at Newport, she was the daughter of Bill and Patricia Treadway. She was a homemaker and was employed by Dollar General in Cave City. She enjoyed photography, the outdoors and flowers. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Magness. -
State braces for flooding
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Water pushed beyond the banks of rivers in east Arkansas on Wednesday, flooding homes and flowing over fields where many farmers had already postponed planting because of an unlikely stretch of wet weather during a drought.

Hillcrest graduation set for May 20
STRAWBERRY — Hillcrest High School will have its graduation at 7 p.m. May 20 in the Lynn multi-purpose building.
Valedictorian is Blake Simmons, son of Phil and Stacy Simmons of Strawberry. His school clubs and activities in-clude Environmental and Spatial Technology Laboratory, Math and Science Club, Beta Club, Robotics, Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America and Arkansas Junior Science Symposium. -
Melbourne Tree Board marks Arbor Day
MELBOURNE — The Melbourne Tree Board celebrated Arkansas Arbor Day Friday morning at the city park. About 20 citizens and officials planted trees provided by the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

State park visitor unearths up 8-carat diamond
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Beth Gilbertson was washing the contents of the buckets of dirt she had collected at the Crater of Diamonds State Park when she suddenly saw something shiny catch her eye.
“I thought it was a piece of glass at first,” she said. “But when I started rubbing it, I realized what it was.”
What Gilbertson had found Tuesday was an 8.66-carat white diamond, roughly the size of a nickel and the third largest diamond found by a visitor since the park was established in 1972. -
Blanchard Springs, other sites closed
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Some outdoors enthusiasts in Arkansas and Oklahoma may have to revise plans for spring weekend camping trips because of storms that raked the two states this week.
Several U.S. Forest Service recreation sites in Arkansas and Oklahoma will be temporarily closed while inspections are carried out for damage from the storms, which killed 11 people on Monday and Tuesday. Last June, 20 campers were killed at the Albert Pike Recreation Area in Montgomery County, Ark., when a flash flood hit. -
Sylamore seeks student employees
MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Sylamore Ranger District of the Ozark National Forest will be hiring four students for summer employment under the Youth Conservation Corps program, according to a news release.
The program, open to youth ages 15-18, begins June 6. Applications can be picked up at the Sylamore Ranger District Office at 1001 E. Main St., Mountain View, and must be completed and returned by May 2.
Interested individuals may also include a resume with their application. Selections will be made by May 2. -

BONETOWN — Finley Creek Cemetery cleanup day will be Saturday.
Those attending are asked to bring tools. The cemetery is located east of Bonetown.

LAFFERTY — The Nail Cemetery at Lafferty will host a cleanup open to the public beginning at about 8 or 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
