Roy Tadlock
Roy L. Tadlock, 88, of Batesville died Sunday, April 24, 2011, in a Batesville hospital.
Born July 24, 1922, at Ash Flat, he was the son of O.V. and Lela Mae Bristow Tadlock. He was a carpenter and enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and wrestling. He was a member of Allen Chapel Free Will Baptist Church at Southside. -
‘All Rise’ bike ride slated
The All Rise Century Bike Ride to benefit the Independence County DWI drug court will be held May 21, according to a news release.
The ride, hosted by White River Medical Center, will begin at 7:30 a.m. and start at the Independence County Department of Human Services office, 100 Weaver Road off Highway 69 East.
Bounce houses and face painting will be available for children from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DHS. -
Board reschedules meeting
MELBOURNE — The Melbourne School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the district administration building at Melbourne. Members will consider rehiring classified personnel and adoption of the 2011-12 school calendar.
Meetings are open to the public. -
Correction
CUSHMAN — The name of the mayor of Cushman was incorrectly provided for the Guard’s Community Focus 2011 special section published Thursday.
Lora Weatherford is the mayor.
Weatherford said the city is no longer in charge of the annual Miner’s Day festival. She said Heather Fulbright is community chairwoman for that event. -
Mississippi nears highest level since ’37
VICKSURG, Miss. (AP) — The National Weather Service has forecast that the Mississippi River will crest at 52.5 feet in Vicksburg on May 13, the highest level since 1937.
“We’ve got water coming down on top of heavy rain,” Marty Pope, senior service hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, told the Vicksburg Post.
“It’s looking pretty bad right now. We have lots of rain to come, too.” -
Storms leave 8 dead in Arkansas
VILONIA (AP) — Emergency crews worked to account for dozens of people still missing today after a powerful storm battered Arkansas with floods, high winds and tornados, snapping utility poles, twisting one tractor-trailer like a wrung dish rag and leaving at least eight people dead.

Poplar Bluff levee breaches
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) — A police officer said a levee protecting a southeast Missouri town from major flooding has breached and that authorities are planning to evacuate residents from more homes in the area.
Poplar Bluff police Officer Daron House said today that water is pouring through a crack in the levee on a road southeast of Poplar Bluff and that crews are looking into a report of a possible second breach.
He said water from the breach is pouring into a drainage ditch but that officials are concerned it could flood a wider area. -
City prepares for potential flooding
The weather has put Batesville city officials on alert, as they are doing everything they can to lessen the effects of rising water.
Fire Chief Brent Gleghorn told the city council at its meeting Monday night that the fire department spent most of the day preparing for water problems at the firefighters training center. Items were being stored by the water department and will be moved back when the water recedes providing there is no damage. -

Dog owners in the Cave City and surrounding area will be pleased to learn that Chel’s Puppy Palace is now offering a full grooming service.
A graduate of the Arkansas Pet Grooming School, owner Michelle Sims offers her dog grooming services in an environmentally controlled facility where pets are comfortable and safe.
“I offer a full grooming service that includes shampoo, drying, trimming (paws and ears), nail clipping, ears cleaned, and gland checks,” Sims said from her shop at 1095 Antioch Road. “We offer a flea and tick bath too, if a client wants it,” she said. -
Area 16 Special Olympics event set for Friday in Pioneer Stadium
The annual Area 16 Special Olympics Track and Field Meet is set for Friday in Pioneer Stadium and approximately 200 athletes are scheduled to compete, announced Diane Wentz, one of the organizers.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. The last event is expected to be completed by around 2 p.m., Wentz said.
Special Olympians from Batesville, The Community School, Southside, Cave City, Quitman, Melbourne and Mountain View schools will compete. -
Conditions keep schedule makers guessing; 4A-2 baseball, softball tournaments slated
We will see what the weather and saturated fields will allow, but at least we now know the postseason baseball and softball schedules for four area teams.
In meetings Monday, assignments were made for the 4A-2 District Tournaments, which will be hosted by Cave City. The baseball tourney is set to begin Thursday and end Saturday. The softball tourney is slated to begin Friday and end Monday (see the “Sports calendar” on this page for the schedules through Saturday).
