Thanksgiving accident gets driver DWI
A Thanksgiving day accident in which a utility pole was broken and utility lines knocked down resulted in a Newark man facing several traffic charges, including drunk driving.
Deputy Phillip Pickett, with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office, said he and Deputy Duane Grice responded to a one-vehicle accident on North Hill Street in Newark around 10:30 a.m. where a 1991 Dodge pickup truck driven by 49-year-old John Norman Patterson had struck a power pole. -
NCARED begins strategic planning process; name change considered
MOUNTAIN HOME — With the end of the year in sight, the NCARED Board has begun updating its strategic plan.
The North Central Arkansas Regional Economic Development Board met recently at First National Bank and Trust in Mountain Home. Dr. Mark Peterson, professor of community development with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, facilitated the process during the four-hour session. -
ASU Ringers present concert
SIDNEY — The Sidney Baptist Church will host the Arkansas State University handbell ringers during a Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The church is located at 9 Branch St. in Sidney.
Admission is free and open to the public, but a love offering will be received. -
Arrested for burglary, theft, man faces felony charges
Charges of being a felon in possession of a gun, along with theft of property have been filed against a 23-year-old Batesville man after he allegedly stole several guns, a flat screen TV and other items from an Ashley Drive home sometime around the night of Nov. 20.
“The victim at the residence said she had been gone since the afternoon of the previous day and when she returned she found that a shotgun, a pistol, a flat screen TV, and other electronic equipment were taken from her residence,” Independence County Detective Robert Moser said. -
Hospice journey to camp at park
MOUNTAIN HOME — The Float for Life team will be camping in Kennedy Park at Batesville on Saturday night with special permission and the date, Dec. 4, has special significance for the team.
On Dec. 4, 2004, three Arkansas men whose lives had been touched by Hospice of the Ozarks set out on a journey that led them 418 miles down the White River from Bull Shoals Dam all the way to the Mississippi River. -
China bound
Having spent a semester in London during college, Europe is a subject international studies lab teacher Julie Williams loves to teach her students at Eagle Mountain Magnet Elementary.
Living in London and experiencing European culture while a student at Harding University has allowed Williams, a first-year teacher, to present European subjects in a way she hopes brings the material “to life and makes it tangible” for her students to understand.
She hopes to bring back the same experiences to her students following an eight-day trip to China that begins Thursday. -
Items stolen
Returning home from a Thanksgiving trip, Miho Ponnath of North Hill St. in Batesville discovered her home burglarized and several pieces of jewelry stolen along with guns and electronic equipment.
Sgt. Wayne Green with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office said it appeared entry to the Ponnath home was made through a damaged, but secured, sliding glass door at the rear of the residence. -
Food drive is Sunday
The 2010 Christmas Brings Hope drive is already under way, volunteer Ted Hall said. The food drive assists about 1,200 families annually, Hall said.
On Sunday volunteers from various organizations will pick up food beginning at 2 p.m. Items range from canned soups and meats, vegetables and fruits, tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, to bar soaps, shampoo and other toiletries around homes and businesses in Independence County. -
Blytheville juniors sweep Batesville in district openers
BLYTHEVILLE — The home teams swept Batesville in 5A-East District junior high basketball openers here Monday night.
The Blytheville Junior Lady Chickasaws won 25-22 on the strength of Tyneisha Bell’s 21 points, and the Junior Chicks won 40-24 as Ray Burton led a 16-3 fourth-quarter surge.
The Junior Lady Pioneers lost after leading 2-1, 7-4 and 11-10 at the end of each quarter. Bell scored 12 of her 21 points in the final stanza and they included the last three. -
Concord teams move up in White County tourney
JUDSONIA — Concord’s senior high teams moved up with first-round victories in the White County Invitational Tournament here Monday night.
The Lady Pirates defeated their hosts, the White County Central Lady Bears, 53-49 as Kayla Richardson totaled 14 points and nine rebounds, and Casey Goercke fired in 16 points.
The Lady Pirates improved to 9-4 and will take on the Pangburn Lady Tigers in the quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at 4. -
Regular-season finale shows Razorbacks are much more than passers for big plays
FAYETTEVILLE — Jake Bequette missed seeing all but the last of Ryan Mallett’s to Cobi Hamilton 80-yard touchdown pass before halftime shocker.
But the Arkansas Razorbacks’ defensive end knew to look for Mallett throwing a fourth-quarter, fourth-and-3 surprise even before some on Arkansas’ offense did.
Like everyone but Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino, Bequette was already regrouping for halftime. He didn’t see Mallett not take a knee like most quarterbacks do the last play of a half at their own 20. -
Students’ short stories highlight 2nd Friday
Short stories will be on the menu at the Cinnamon Stick for the next 2nd Friday Downtown Wander and Wonder Walk.
