Well, my niece Abby has seen what all the fuss is about regarding Black Friday, and she’s still not sure she understands it.

Hunting for heroes
America’s developing a real thing for heroes — not the kind in fiction, but the real-life variety.
Oprah does entire shows about them. CNN ranks and profiles them in recurrent specials. President Obama even released a kids’ book about his 13 favorite heroes, and recently presented the Medal of Honor to Army Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, the first time the award has gone to a living hero since Vietnam. -
ASU Coach Steve Roberts resigns
JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State football Coach Steve Roberts resigned Monday after back-to-back 4-8 seasons, ending an up-and-down 9-year tenure at the Sun Belt school.
Lee said the school had reached a financial settlement with Roberts, who was 45-63 overall. He also said no interim coach had been named.
“This has been a very difficult day,” Lee said. -
Dossey, Wells are united in marriage
Megan Lynn Dossey and Jonathan Stuart Wells were united in marriage on Oct. 9 at the John T. Wilmeth Chapel of Peace in De Queen. John Lindsey officiated.
The bride is the daughter of the late Roger and Carylin Dossey of De Queen. The groom’s parents are Steve and Karen Wells of Batesville. -
Account established for victim of house fire
SOUTHSIDE — An account has been established at First Southern Bank for Don Smith of Southside, who lost everything in a house fire on Nov. 20.

Auxiliary to host crafts, bake sale
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a crafts and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post No. 4501, 1680 Chaney Drive in Batesville.
Table space can be rented for $10. Proceeds from the sale will help provide funds for uniforms and provide for the auxiliary’s youth programs, VFW Quartermaster Ashleigh Brashers said.

Holiday benefit scheduled
SIDNEY — Three local churches are partnering to offer a free holiday benefit in the community, according to a news release.
First Baptist Church of Evening Shade, Sidney Baptist Church and Grace Country Church of Sidney have joined efforts to hold “Care to Share” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sidney Baptist Church. -
Townsends selling chicken items for foster kids’ Christmas
Townsends of Arkansas will host a “Townsend Truck Sale” to raise money for foster children’s Christmas presents.
The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Walmart in Batesville.
The following products will be available for sale to the public:
• 10-pound box Southern style tender fritter (similar to popcorn chicken), $15;
• 10-pound box fully cooked chicken tender, $15;
• 10-pound box fully cooked Italian breaded filet, $15;
• 10-pound box fully cooked 4-ounce grilled breast, $20; -
EHC members will meet
The Christmas Extension Homemakers Council meeting will be Friday at the Pfeiffer Clubhouse, located on Highway 167 three miles north of Batesville.
Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will be at 10.
A catered lunch will be served.
Items on the agenda include a report on the fall craft fair and awards. -
Movie to be screened
Jubilee Family Church in Batesville will host a free drive-in movie at 7 p.m. Friday.
“Iron Man 2” will be projected in high definition in the church’s indoor theater setting.
This is a special, family friendly edition of the movie that has removed any objectionable language or scenes, according to a news release.

Ozarka plans holiday event
MELBOURNE — Ozarka College is hosting a “Ozarka Holiday Express” event Friday in the John E. Miller Education Complex on the main campus of Ozarka College in Melbourne. This event will be free to Ozarka College students, their families and the community.
Beginning at 5 p.m. the John E. Miller lobby will have pictures and gifts with Santa (while supplies last), culinary treats, the First National Banking Company train, and free admission to a holiday movie, beginning at 7 in the auditorium. -
Church offers Parent’s Night Out
The Family Connections Ministry of Batesville First Assembly of God Church is hosting a Parent’s Night Out on Friday from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday.
“Parents can go Christmas shopping or just spend an evening together without the kids,” a news release states. Supper and activities will be provided for the children at Batesville First Assembly on 20th and Lyon streets.
