Ozarka hosts College and Career Planning Day
MELBOURNE — The Ozarka College Admissions Department hosted the annual College Planning Day on Oct. 26 in the John E. Miller Education Complex. College, university, financial and armed forces representatives, as well as various other agencies were set up to offer information to local high school seniors throughout the morning.

Man who caused wreck dragged from house
When a police officer tracked Lonnie Massey down for leaving the scene of an accident, he wasn’t going without a fight. In fact the officer had to physically drag the drunk Massey out of his mother’s house, according to an affidavit filed Tuesday in Independence County Circuit Court.

Traffic light work continues
CAVE CITY — Street work in Cave City in connection with correcting a traffic light that has been malfunctioning whenever lightning is in the area is ongoing, but the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department still has not let city officials know when the work will be completed, Recorder-treasurer Kathy Wooldridge said this morning.

Service News: Navy Seaman Recruit Andrew A. McLoy and Anthony S. McLoy
NORFOLK, Va. — Navy Seaman Recruit Andrew A. McLoy, son of Mary E. Moore of Floral and Anthony S. McLoy of Jonesboro, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, McLoy completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. -
Albert Sidney Johnston, UDC
The Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter #135 United Daughters of the Confederacy met recently at the Batesville Country Club for a Dutch treat luncheon.
President Dora Kate Lee led the pledges to the United States flag, Arkansas flag, first national flag of the Confederacy and Christian flag, followed by the UDC Ritual. -
Foster wins crown
PLEASANT PLAINS — Emily Ann Foster, 13-year-old daughter of David and Lisa Foster of Pleasant Plains, was recently crowned Arkansas State Seasonal Splendor Supreme Queen in a beauty pageant in Jacksonville.
Foster competed against contestants from across the state in pageant attire, outfit of choice, costume of choice and talent.
She was also awarded the Supreme Title in the talent category for her tap routine. -
Church hosting ‘crusade’
SOUTHSIDE — Southside Assembly of God Church will host its 2010 Children’s Crusade Sunday through Nov. 3 at the church located at 549 Heber Springs Road.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and is open to the public.

Checks from fairs are ready
MELBOURNE — The North Central Arkansas District Fair premium checks are in and available for pickup, said Nancy Orr, Sharp County board member for the fair.
Checks may be picked up at the following locations:
• Izard County — the district fair office at Melbourne;
• Sharp County — Ozark Title Service in Ash Flat;
• Van Buren County — Corrine Weatherly’s clothing business in Clinton. -
Holiday benefit scheduled
SIDNEY — Three local churches are partnering to offer a free holiday benefit in the community, according to a news release.
First Baptist Church of Evening Shade, Sidney Baptist Church and Grace Country Church of Sidney have joined efforts to hold “Care to Share” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at Sidney Baptist Church. -
4-H Awards presented
The 2010 4-H Awards & Recognition Banquet was held Sept. 16 at the Batesville High School cafeteria.
A catfish and chicken buffet dinner was served for the banquet before the awards ceremony with 150 attending. Awards were presented to the 4-H’ers on their project work for 2010. Club and leader awards were also given. -
AARP meeting scheduled
The Batesville chapter of AARP will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Citizens Bank Community Room for an executive meeting of board members.
Hank Rivers, president, suggested that members vote early or after the meeting. -
Reunion is Saturday
HUTCHINSON MOUNTAIN — The Creech family reunion will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Mountain Community Center. The event is open to all friends and family.
