Edith Ball
JONESBORO — Edith V. Mitchell Ball, 97, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, in a Jonesboro hospice.
She was born in Evening Shade and moved to Detroit in 1950. She moved to Paragould in 1962. She and her husband, David L. Ball, owned and operated Ball’s Grocery on Highway 141 in Paragould until retiring in 1978. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and made quilts even after age 90. She was a member of Herndon Church of Christ. -
James Hellner
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — James J. Hellner, 90, of Cherokee Village died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, in a Melbourne nursing home.
Born Feb. 5, 1920, at Detroit, he was the son of Joseph and Agatha Riis Hellner. He was a bookkeeper for Phillip’s Petroleum and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Highland.
Survivors include a son, Timothy James Hellner of Marengo, Ind.; and a daughter, Julie Ann Hellner of Ash Flat.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June M. Hellner; and a sister, Peggy Larry. -
Krikett Sisco
HIGHLAND — Krikett Ann Sisco, 34, of Highland died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, in a Little Rock hospital.
Born Jan. 20, 1976, at Batesville, she was the daughter of Carl and Janet Hamilton Trivitt.
Survivors include her husband, Josh Sisco; three children, Lucas Sisco, Saibrah Sisco and Jakub Sisco, all of Highland; her mother of Highland; two brothers, Josh Trivitt of Highland and Rowdy Trivitt of Hardy; her grandparents, Carl and Lena Hamilton of Hardy and Elouise Trivitt of Ash Flat; several nephews and nieces; and many uncles. -
Mad over defeat
I am writing in regards to the story in Tuesday’s Guard about a Mr. Beller who says, as a proponent of the defeated, and deservedly so, the tax increase voted on recently that the Tea Party was unethical in their efforts to defeat the tax. He states that “Mr. Finch was the contact with the Batesville Guard Record. He told my son he had to work against the tax because the TEA PARTY had voted to fight it. He also carried signs. He may not be the president but probably an officer”.

Get over it
Dear editor:
I would like to file a sore loser complaint against Dr. Bill Beller. The TEA Party of Independence County did not cost Mr. Beller and his cronies the election. It was the will of the voters that cast their votes against it. Dr. Beller and the Moving Batesville Forward Recreational Facilities Task Force tried everything they could to get this ridiculous tax passed. -
The rub off effect

Batesville cross country team dominate meet in Pocahontas
POCAHONTAS — The Batesville Lady Pioneers ran away with the team title at a cross country meet here at Old Davidsonville State Park.
Natalie Meinzer led the way, winning the 5-kilometer race in a time of 20 minutes, 12 seconds. Seven seconds later, teammate Logan Bishop crossed the finish line in second place. The rest of the Lady Pioneers to score were: Mollie Matthews, who finished fourth in 21:35; Halle Rush, who placed seventh in 22:47, and Lauren Garrison, eighth in 22:52. -
Rams looking forward to dance, if not Pioneers
Near the end of a telephone interview Wednesday evening, Paragould Coach Tim Branum found an opportunity for some humor.
“We’re just worried about how we’re going to get to the dance early,” he said, laughing.
Then he apologized for the funny little dodge to a question about what the Rams had to do to give themselves a chance to win against the Batesville Pioneers in a 5A-East District high school football game Friday night.
It’s also the Rams’ homecoming game and, yes, there is a dance afterward. -
Students give back during Service Day
Lyon College senior softball player Katie Sentinella couldn’t help but smile as batter after batter hit her pitches. She even encouraged them.
“There you go,” she said to one batter who made a little bit of contact with the ball. “Swing hard.” -
BHS gets league win in Beebe
BEEBE — The Batesville Lady Pioneers improved to 6-1 in 5A-Central Conference volleyball with a 3-0 win over the Beebe Lady Badgers.
The game scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-15. Hannah Huff led the visitors with 11 kills and 14 digs. Kandess Pfitzner tacked on 10 assists, 10 kills and eight digs. Jayme Shell provided four aces and 15 kills. Lainey Rumans led in assists with 18. Libero Alyza Vasquez registered 25 digs. Kali Foreman tallied three blocks. -
West Side Greers Ferry wins state golf tourney
LA CROSSE — The West Side Greers Ferry Lady Eagles won the Class 1A golf state championship Tuesday at Cooper’s Hawk Golf Course.
The Lady Eagles earned a team total of 294 to beat Shirley by eight strokes. Calico Rock was third with a 308.
Calico Rock’s Emily Johnson was the tournament medalist with a 12-over-par 84. Sydney Sutterfield of Rural Special was second with a 90 while Makenzie Head of Shirley carded a 94.
West Side’s team total was the combined effort of Laney Lucas (95), Mara Duncan (96) and Brooke Rogers (103). -
S-side juniors to host winless ’Rabbits
This time last season, the Southside Junior Southerners were preparing for a school-record 4-0 start in football, and they got it with a 20-12 victory over the Lonoke Junior Jackrabbits.
Thursday night at Stewart Field, the Junior Southerners will try to stop a 2-game skid and break through in the 4A-2 District when they host the Jackrabbits. After winning their season opener in Searcy against nonconference foe Riverview, the Junior Southerners fell to district foes Stuttgart and Clinton.
