‘Mad Men’ wins Emmy for drama, ‘Modern Family’ for best comedy
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The darkly intimate 1960s-era drama “Mad Men” and the comedy romp “Modern Family” were the top honorees at Sunday’s Emmy Awards as American life past and present proved a winning formula.
“To our fans, we are so grateful, we are so thrilled that families are sitting down together to watch a television show, and we’re so happy that you have let us into your families,” said Steven Levitan, “Modern Family” executive producer. -
School offers free aerobics classes
NEWARK — The Cedar Ridge School District is offering aerobics classes and a walking/running club.
Aerobics will be held at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Newark Elementary gym. The first class begins tonight.
The 45-minute sessions, featuring different levels for beginners and those more experienced, will be offered free to the community and instructed by Terri Ann Cunningham. Participants can sign up when the classes begin.
A free running and walking club will also be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Cedar Ridge High School track. -
Teens busted for drugs, auto theft
Claiming they were lost and didn’t know why their SUV smelled of marijuana, two teenage boys were detained by Lyon College security early this morning and are now facing numerous drug charges, according to Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Stephens.
Stephens, who responded with Deputies Wayne Green and Anthony Carter, said the boys, ages 15 and 17, were detained at the college security office around 2 a.m. after being found driving around the parking lots.
Both boys claimed they were lost and trying to get home, Stephens said. -
Marty Stuart to be at Folk Center
MOUNTAIN VIEW — Marty Stuart will be headlining the evening performance as part of the Tribute to Grandpa Jones weekend at the Ozark Folk Center State Park.
Stuart will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $20.
Meanwhile, Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist Sam Bush will be headlining the Friday evening performance at 7. Tickets are $15.

Curtis Wilson
MELBOURNE — Curtis Wilson, 76, of Melbourne died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, in Batesville.
Born March 18, 1934, in Tyronza, he was the son of Emmett and India Jeffery Wilson. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed puzzles and gardening. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Fay Crestwell Wilson; and two brothers, Harold Wilson of Columbia, Mo., and Robert Wilson of Edmond, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Edwin Wilson. -
Jeremy Wood correction
CHARLOTTE — Incorrect information was provided to the Guard for the obituary of Jeremy Wood, which ran in Friday’s edition.
Graveside services were at 4 p.m. today in Wood Cemetery with Jeff Childers officiating. Arrangements were by Willis Funeral Service in Batesville.
Survivors include his grandmother (adopted mother), Ruthie Wood.

Florence Taylor
GAINESBORO — Florence Jackson Taylor, 85, of the Gainesboro community died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, in a Batesville hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1925, in the Gainesboro community, she was the daughter of Fred Jackson Sr. and Eva Tripp Jackson. She was a homemaker and a cook at Cord-Charlotte School. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a member of Antioch Church of Christ. -
Naomi Smith
POUGHKEEPSIE — Naomi Smith, 90, of Poughkeepsie died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, in a Cave City nursing home.
Born July 16, 1920, at Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of Charley and Fannie Medlock. She was a homemaker and was retired from Smith’s Grocery Store in Poughkeepsie. She was a member of Poughkeepsie Church of Christ. -
Melford Morgan
Melford Levi Morgan, 85, of Batesville died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010.
Born Aug. 21, 1925, in Wappapello, Mo., he was the son of Roger and Addie Wilson Morgan. He was a cabinet maker, having retired in 1993 from Western Manufacturing in Arlington, Texas. He was a member of Blackwater Baptist Church at Manila. He had played the guitar for 60 years and enjoyed traveling, listening to bluegrass music and gardening. -
Doris Smith
Doris M. Smith, 86, of Batesville died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in a Batesville hospital.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Phoenix. Arrangements are by Qualls Batesville Funeral Service.
No local service or visitation will be held.
Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Daphene Milligan
CAVE CITY — Daphene James Milligan, 75, of Cave City died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at her home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Missionary Baptist Church in Cave City. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery east of Cave City under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Henry Melton
Henry C. Melton, 93, of Batesville, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, in a Batesville nursing home.
Born March 4, 1917, in the Lafferty area, he was the son of Richard and Della Mae Clouse Melton. He was the owner of Independence County Construction Company and was a home builder in the Batesville area for 45 years. He enjoyed building, gardening, cooking and canning. He was a Mason and a member of Cushman Assembly of God Church.
