Local auto theft suspect arrested in LR
A 31-year-old Beebe woman, wanted in Batesville on charges of auto theft, theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit card, has been arrested in Little Rock, local authorities said.
Independence County Sheriff’s Detective Jeff Sims said the charges against Dana M. Green stemmed from an incident earlier this month when Green reportedly borrowed a car belonging to Joseph Palmieri and never brought it back. -

Dispatcher sues ex-boss, county
JONESBORO (AP) — The Greene County sheriff and county officials have been sued by a former dispatcher who alleges she was fired in retaliation for a sexual harassment report against a co-worker.
According to the federal complaint filed in Jonesboro, Audra Gunn accused Sheriff Dan Langston of terminating her employment last year because of her gender, in retaliation for her “opposition to gender discrimination” and for exercising her free speech rights. -
Charges dropped against judge
BENTONVILLE (AP) — A Benton County judge charged with misdemeanors related to the way he awarded three county projects has had three of the seven charges against him dropped.
Benton County Judge David Bisbee still faces three counts of violating ethics for county government officers and employees and one count of unlawful judicial intention. -
Final Ark. airmen wing return
FORT SMITH (AP) — The final group of airmen from an Arkansas Air National Guard fighter wing have returned home after a deployment to Afghanistan.
About 50 airmen from the 188th Fighter Wing arrived back in Fort Smith on Tuesday afternoon after a stopover at an air base in South Carolina. In January, the wing sent 50 members overseas and 225 others joined them in March to serve in the Aerospace Expeditionary Force rotation.
About 200 of the airmen returned to Fort Smith on May 17 and 10 aviators came home Saturday. -
Swifton Post Office to be named after George Kell
WASHINGTON —U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) announced Senate passage of a bill to name the post office in Swifton after George Kell, who was known as a famous athlete and community leader. The post office is located at 109 Main St. in Swifton. The bill passed the House of Representatives on Dec. 2, 2009 and now will be signed into law.

Church to host ‘Gospel Ministry’
CUSHMAN — Cushman Baptist Church will host the “Gospel Music Ministry of Doc and Connie” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is free but an offering will be taken. Proceeds will benefit the Women’s Addictions Resistance Project and family work of Friendship Outreach, Inc.
The church is located on Claxton Loop at Cushman. -
Garbage pickup postponed
NEWARK — Due to mechanical problems with the truck, garbage in Newark will not be picked up Monday, Recorder-treasurer Joanne Langston said. The next garbage pickup will be Thursday.

County offices to close
In observance of Memorial Day holiday, all Independence County offices will be closed Monday.
The Independence County Library will be closed Saturday through Monday.
All county offices will reopen Tuesday.
All Independence County trash and recycle routes will run on schedule. -
