ASU prof studies Ozark freshwater pond organisms
Pond ecosystems offer a unique opportunity to study close up and first-hand the ecological interactions of organisms within a confined habitat. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), sometimes called the Father of Microbiology, was the first person to examine and describe pond microorganisms with a crude light microscope over three centuries ago. He called the various microorganisms that he saw, “cavorting little beasties.” Today’s scientists continue to be intrigued by the breadth of organismal diversity found in pond water. By itself, a pond is a “microcosm of life.”
