Archaeology event to honor culture
JONESBORO — The Arkansas State University Museum and the Arkansas Archeological Survey will host a free archeological event in the main museum gallery on the Jonesboro campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 6, according to a news release.

Meeting set
The Batesville AARP chapter will hold an executive meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the community room of the Citizens Bank annex.
The meeting is open to all AARP and committee members. -
License suspended for 6 months
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — An Arkansas Supreme Court committee has suspended the law license of an Izard County attorney for six months for avoiding a client.
The court’s Committee on Professional Conduct also ordered Stephen L. Lewis to pay $5,600 in restitution and $50 in costs. The committee cited professional misconduct in Lewis’ handling of a case involving damage to a motorcycle while a potential buyer drove it in 2003. -
Southside accepting nominations
SOUTHSIDE — The Southside Gifted and Talented program is currently accepting nominations for prospective students until April 1.
Students who are nominated will be screened and a committee will consider the needs of each student based on screening information. Screenings will include classroom performance, reasoning skills, academic excellence, standardized test performance and creative ability. -
Hillcrest approved for criminal grant
STRAWBERRY — Students at the Hillcrest School District could soon be learning about the criminal justice system now that a grant application to start a program has been approved by the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education.
Superintendent Greg Crabtree told the school board Monday that according to a letter, the district will receive about $37,000 in supplies to start a program, however, he would know more details in the next few months. -
Becker: Big Labor’s Plan B
Over the past year business owners and workers from across the state rallied together to convey their strong opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). This legislation would fundamentally rewrite the nation’s labor laws by usurping secret ballot elections and allowing government bureaucrats to set contracts without consent from employers or employees, giving labor unions a clear and unfair advantage.

CAVE CITY — Lloyd Anderson Perry, 89, of Cave City died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, in a Cave City nursing home.
Born May 4, 1920, at Lafferty, he was the son of E.A. and Della M. Watkins Perry. He was a farmer and a member of Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church at Nelsonville. -
Louise King
CAVE CITY — Louise King, 53, of Cave City died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at her home.
Born June 21, 1956, in Marianna, she was the daughter of Huey John Thomas Chastain and Virginia Ellen Melson. She was a millwright for a construction company. She enjoyed painting, shopping, antique shopping, walks on the farm and sitting on the front porch swing. She was involved with and supported cancer awareness. She was a member of Quail Valley Church of Christ. -
Ed Jeffery
SALESVILLE — Finis Edward “Ed” Jeffery, 80, of Salesville, formerly of Batesville, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, in a Mountain Home hospital.
He was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Mount Olive. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952 and was a Korean War veteran. He was very patriotic. He retired from Santa Fe Trailways after 25 years and later worked as a contractor in Batesville, allowing him to continue doing woodworking. He enjoyed fishing, especially at Lake Norfork, hunting, the outdoors and the Mountain Home and northern Arkansas area. -
Mary Russ
CAVE CITY — Mary Jane Milligan Russ, 83, of Cave City died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in a Batesville hospital.
Born Oct. 11, 1926, in Cave City, she was the daughter of George Washington Milligan and Coy Faye Davis Milligan. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing Scrabble and cooking. She was a member of Grace Communion Church. -

Wisdom, Miehl set to solemnize vows
JONESBORO — Vaughn and Ellen Wisdom of Jonesboro have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Erin Deirdre Wisdom, to Robert Joseph Miehl, son of Mike and Karen Cole of Bono and the late Michael Miehl.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Ida Dickey of Jonesboro and the late Melvin Dickey and the late C.W. and Juanita Wisdom.
She is a 2009 honor graduate of Westside High School and is a freshman at Arkansas State University.
She is employed at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
