Ellie Kate Baldridge
Bryce and Amber Baldridge and Easton of Jonesboro have announced the birth of a daughter and sister at White River Medical Center on Nov. 16, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and has been named Ellie Kate Baldridge.
Grandparents of the child are Jim and Barb Philhours of Jonesboro and Noel and Joyce Baldridge of Batesville.
Great-grandparent is Lavern Ladd of Caraway. -
Ella Elizabeth Moran
Steven and Julie Moran and Kenlee of Desha have announced the birth of a daughter and sister at White River Medical Center on Nov. 23, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 14.7 ounces and has been named Ella Elizabeth Moran.
Grandparents of the child are Mike and Kathy Moran and John and Diane Richardson.
Great-grandparents are Panzie Barber and Jimmy and Dolores Richardson. -
Christmas at Graceland
Nothing kicks off the Christmas season better for me than the lights of Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis.
And, it did just that Nov. 20 with a lighting ceremony and special guests Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Richard Marx and children from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
I wasn’t there this year, but in some ways it felt like I was thanks to a Graceland Web cam and live streaming video and audio as Marx and the children flipped a big red switch to make the lights come on. -
Cord family injured in Missouri
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Cord woman and two children were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash near Squires, Mo. around 7 a.m. Friday morning, according to Missouri State Police.
Police say Brenda K. Richardson, 58, of Cord was driving a 2005 GMC truck northbound on Highway 5, a mile south of Squires, when she crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2009 Freightliner driven by 38-year-old Anthony Beach of Fairgrove, Mo. -
4-H club feeds community
SOUTHSIDE — More than 200 people turned out for the Southside 4-H Club’s Thanksgiving dinner for the community, held Thursday at the high school cafeteria.
Club Leader Pam Gramling praised the efforts of the 4-H members, as well as those from the community.,
She said several people asked what they could do to help, and some made desserts, helped wash dishes and cleaned tables. Among the helpers were Southside’s new middle school principal, Dion Stephens, and his family. -
Violence, drunk driving, failure to return videos top Izard County arrests
MELBOURNE — A Thanksgiving night report of domestic violence at a Pineville residence has resulted in one arrest, Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said.
Timothy Lee Allen, 43, of 503 Estes Heights was arrested and charged with third-degree domestic battering, second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, and public intoxication.
A woman reported that she was hit with a belt and that her 10-month-old baby had possibly been hit as well. When deputies arrived, Allen had left the house but was later found hiding in a shed, Lawrence said. -
Cotter man remembers tourism efforts in 1965
COTTER (AP) — Can you imagine opening a resort on Bull Shoals Lake today without a telephone? Bill Jennings remembers the days, not so very long ago, when there was no phone service on the east side of the lake. The year? Circa 1965.
“I had a darkroom in the house,” Jennings said. “I bought a postcard-sized mimeograph and (photographic) postcard stock.” -
Exchange program shows student new experiences
CUSHMAN — Federica Brioschi has discovered a lot since coming to Batesville.
The White River is everywhere, barbecue ribs are good and it’s easy to get lost in a new school when you have to switch classrooms.
Still, the chance to be an exchange student is one the native of Lombardia, Italy wouldn’t have missed for the world. -

Hog running threats keep defenses on toes
FAYETTEVILLE — Under second-year Coach Bobby Petrino and strong-armed transfer quarterback Ryan Mallett, Arkansas leads the SEC in passing offense and touchdown passes.
Yet it seems many defenses, including Mississippi State in last Saturday’s 42-21 Arkansas victory in Little Rock, still stack the box like former Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt was directing the former Arkansas infantry of now-NFL running backs Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis. -
Roebuck stands alone on all-state list
Rachel Roebuck is the only all-state representative from the Guard circulation area for volleyball.
The Cave City junior led the Cavewomen to a second straight state tournament appearance with 609 points this season.
Roebuck also led her team in aces (168) and kills (441) and was third on the team with 587 digs and 152 blocks. -
AG: Gift cards, know what you are giving
LITTLE ROCK — With the holiday shopping season approaching, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has issued this consumer alert to encourage Arkansans to read the fine print when it comes to gift cards.
“Gift cards make great presents, but if you plan to buy some this holiday season, you should know that many stores and companies attach restrictions to them,” said McDaniel. “Consumers should take an extra few minutes at the store to make sure they are getting what they pay for.”
