Toddler dies after pit bull attack
PRESCOTT (AP) — A 2-year-old boy who wandered away from his babysitter’s house and into range of a chained pit bull has died after the dog attacked him.
Matthew Clayton Hurt was pronounced dead Wednesday at a hospital in Texarkana after he was taken there following the attack that morning.
The child had walked down a busy street to the house where the pit bulldog was chained and inside a dog house.
Police Chief Brian Russell said the dog was taken to a kennel in Nashville, Ark., for observation. Russell said he had asked the State Police to investigate. -
Forecasters say major rainfall headed to Arkansas
The National Weather Service says flash flooding is likely as a major storm is expected to dump more rain on Arkansas over the next two days.
The Weather Service said today that people should make plans to protect themselves and their property as the storm front moves in. Forecasters say 5 to 7 inches of rain is expected in parts of central and southern Arkansas through late Friday, with the heaviest rain on a line from Salem to Little Rock to Camden. Areas east and west of that boundary should see 3 to 5 inches of rain. -
Court upholds lethal injection law
LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Supreme Court today ordered a lower court to lift an injunction halting a death row inmate’s execution, upholding a state law aimed at stopping his lawsuit challenging Arkansas’ lethal injection procedures.
In a unanimous ruling, justices sided with the state and dismissed a death row inmate’s complaint challenging a new law codifying Arkansas’ execution procedures. -
4-H’ers compete in B-Day events
Bait casting, bicycle skills, BB gun shooting and broiler barbecuing are the events that more than 82 Independence County 4-H’ers participated in Saturday at the annual B-Day event, according to a news release.

San Antonio — Lauren M. Garcia has been promoted to the rank of private first class in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Garcia is a quartermaster and chemical repairer assigned to the 90th Sustainment Brigade at Camp Pike, Little Rock. She has served in the military for one year.
Garcia is the daughter of Stephanie and Bobby Finley of Batesville. The reservist graduated in 2006 from Southside High School and in 2007 graduated from Beejay’s Hairstyling Academy in Batesville. -
Barbara Stauffer
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Barbara Kay Dickey Stauffer, 68, of Cherokee Village died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1941, at Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of Homer Elmer and Beatrice Inez Kent Dickey. She was a retired district treasurer for Cave City Public School. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and was of the Catholic faith. -
Ruth Dibenedetto
Ruth P. Dibenedetto, 93, of Batesville died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
Born July 30, 1916, in East Springfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Bud and Eva Teaff Trotter. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Trotter of Batesville and James Snider of Davie, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Milligan of Batesville; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. -
Phyllis Mamula
CONWAY — Phyllis Ann Snover Mamula, 71, of Conway died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, in Conway.
Born Aug. 26, 1938, in Clarkston, Mich., she was the daughter of Richard and Helen Allen Snover. She was a retired registered nurse for White River Medical Center and was of the Methodist faith. -
Local woman promotes Arkansas at AARP convention
The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and the Ozark Gateway Region of North Central Arkansas recently attended the AARP Vegas @50+ National Convention.
Donna Perrin with the state department and Cathy Drew, director of the Ozark Gateway Region, attended the three-day event promoting Arkansas tourism destinations and relocation to the area. During the three days 24,115 people attended the event, according to a news release. -
Vital Link offers CPR certification
A healthcare provider cardiopulmonary resuscitation class will be offered by Vital Link from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Alan Davis Conference Center, located at 1033 E.M.S. Drive in Batesville. The fee is $40.
A Heartsaver CPR and first aid class will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 19 in the conference center. The fee of $25 will cover the textbook and CPR card.

Albert Sidney Johnston UDC
The Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter #135, United Daughters of the Confederacy, met this month at the Batesville Country Club for a dutch treat luncheon. President Mary Miller called the meeting to order and welcomed members and guest Sue Richmond, a prospective member.
After the Ritual and the Pledges, Judy Baker read the minutes. Miller gave the treasurer’s report. Acting Chaplain Fern Fike prayed the invocation for the meal. -
Halloween past, present
As a grownup we can approach Halloween from two directions. We can either get dressed up and hit the party circuit or we can get dressed up and answer our door. Some try to figure out how to do both but I prefer focusing on the kids. It gives me a chance every year to remember what a great time I had as a kid in my old neighborhood in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
